The videos and tiktok esk side makes it fun to hear my target language and I love how they (for Japanese) focus on kanji and the answer has the furigana.

I don’t ever leave reviews.  Memrise provides natural speaking habits of your target language and works on listening skills in a way that no other app I’ve found does. I recently started Japanese and I can say that Memrise is great at all languages!

Is Wolof difficult to learn for English speakers?

Wolof is considered moderately to quite challenging for English speakers, broadly sitting in the Category III range with an estimated 1,100 hours to reach professional proficiency. It is a Niger-Congo language spoken primarily in Senegal and The Gambia, and its grammar is structurally unfamiliar — it uses a system of noun classes, a complex verb conjugation system that encodes tense, aspect, and focus within the verb, and a focus-marking system that changes the form of the verb depending on what element of the sentence is being emphasised. Vocabulary shares no roots with English, though some French loanwords exist from the colonial period. On the plus side, Wolof uses a Latin-based alphabet, has a relatively small phoneme inventory, and its grammar follows consistent rules throughout. Memrise structures Wolof learning around high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners build practical familiarity with the focus system and verb conjugations progressively rather than being overwhelmed from the start.

How long does it take to learn Wolof?

Wolof sits in the Category III range, with an estimated 1,100 hours to reach professional proficiency — comparable to other West African languages like Akan-Twi and Lingala. The focus-marking verb system and noun classes take sustained effort to internalise, and vocabulary offers no shortcuts from English beyond occasional French loanwords. That said, the Latin-based alphabet, relatively small phoneme inventory, and consistent grammar rules make the learning experience more predictable once the core structures are familiar. Memrise focuses lessons on high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners build practical familiarity with the focus system and verb conjugations progressively and make steady progress through one of West Africa's most widely spoken languages.
