Is Irish difficult to learn for English speakers?
Irish is considered one of the more challenging languages for English speakers, despite centuries of close contact between the two. Its grammar is structurally unusual — verbs come first in a sentence, nouns change their initial consonants depending on context (a system called "mutation"), and there is no simple word for "yes" or "no". Vocabulary has virtually no overlap with English, though some loanwords exist in both directions. On the plus side, Irish has a relatively small speaker community with strong learning resources, and its spelling, while initially baffling, follows consistent rules once learned. Memrise structures Irish learning around the everyday vocabulary and phrases that build real familiarity with the language, making the grammatical patterns easier to absorb through repeated, meaningful exposure.
How long does it take to learn Irish?
Irish is classified by the US Foreign Service Institute as a Category III language, typically requiring around 900 hours to reach professional proficiency — significantly more than French or Spanish, but less than Finnish or Arabic. The verb-first sentence structure, initial consonant mutations, and lack of shared vocabulary with English all slow early progress. However, the grammar is consistent once the core patterns are learned, and short daily practice sessions compound quickly.
