It is the latest stage of the ancient Egyptian language, written in the Coptic alphabet — a script derived from Greek with several additional characters borrowed from Demotic Egyptian — which takes a few weeks to master but is phonetically consistent once learned. Grammar is verb-initial, with a complex system of tenses expressed through prefixes attached to verb stems, and noun phrases are structured differently from English, with definite articles that vary by gender and number. Vocabulary draws on both ancient Egyptian roots and significant Greek borrowings, meaning occasional familiar words for those with Greek or Latin background. Coptic survives today primarily as the liturgical language of the Coptic Orthodox Church, giving it a dedicated learner community and solid religious text resources. How long does it take to learn Coptic?
