Is Cornish difficult to learn for English speakers?
Cornish is considered moderately to quite challenging for English speakers, broadly comparable to Welsh and Breton in difficulty. It is a Celtic language of the Brythonic branch, sharing the same verb-initial sentence structure and initial consonant mutation system as Welsh — where the beginning of a word changes depending on grammatical context — a feature with no parallel in English. Vocabulary has virtually no overlap with modern English, though some loanwords exist in both directions from centuries of contact. A unique added complexity is that Cornish went extinct as a native language in the late 18th century and has been revived from historical texts, meaning there is some variation between the different revived spelling systems in use today.
