The videos and tiktok esk side makes it fun to hear my target language and I love how they (for Japanese) focus on kanji and the answer has the furigana.

Is Anglo-Saxon difficult to learn for English speakers?
Anglo-Saxon (Old English) is considered moderately to quite challenging for English speakers — more demanding than most people expect, despite being the direct ancestor of modern English. On the surface, words like mann, god, and land are immediately recognisable, but the grammar is far more complex than modern English, featuring four noun cases, three grammatical genders, and extensive verb conjugations that modern English has almost entirely lost. The vocabulary, while ancestrally related, has diverged enough that most Old English texts are effectively unreadable without dedicated study — Beowulf looks closer to German than to modern English at first glance. That said, the Latin-based runic-influenced alphabet is straightforward, and the grammar, while archaic, follows consistent patterns throughout. Memrise structures Anglo-Saxon learning around high-frequency vocabulary and core grammatical patterns, helping learners build a practical foundation in the language that shaped modern English progressively.
How long does it take to learn Anglo-Saxon?
Anglo-Saxon (Old English) has no official US Foreign Service Institute rating, but is broadly estimated to require 900 to 1,100 hours to reach reading proficiency — the most practical goal for most learners, as Old English is a historical language with no native speakers. The four-case grammar, grammatical gender, and extensive verb conjugations take sustained effort for modern English speakers to internalise, despite the ancestral connection. That said, the vocabulary becomes increasingly recognisable as familiarity grows, and the grammar follows consistent patterns throughout, which rewards patient, regular practice. Memrise focuses lessons on high-frequency vocabulary and core grammatical patterns, helping learners build a practical foundation in the language that gave birth to modern English steadily and progressively.
