The videos and tiktok esk side makes it fun to hear my target language and I love how they (for Japanese) focus on kanji and the answer has the furigana.

I don’t ever leave reviews.  Memrise provides natural speaking habits of your target language and works on listening skills in a way that no other app I’ve found does. I recently started Japanese and I can say that Memrise is great at all languages!

Is Cherokee difficult to learn for English speakers?

Cherokee is considered one of the most challenging languages for English speakers, broadly sitting in the Category IV range with an estimated 1,500 hours or more to reach professional proficiency. It uses the Cherokee syllabary — a writing system of 85 characters invented by Sequoyah in the early 19th century — which takes several weeks to master but is phonetically consistent once learned. Grammar is polysynthetic and verb-final, with extraordinarily complex verb forms that encode subject, object, tense, aspect, direction, and the physical characteristics of objects all within a single word — a level of grammatical complexity that has no parallel in English. Vocabulary shares no roots with English. That said, the syllabary is one of the more learnable non-Latin scripts, and the Cherokee Nation has invested significantly in language revitalisation resources in recent years. Memrise structures Cherokee learning around high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners tackle the syllabary and core grammatical patterns progressively rather than being overwhelmed from the start.

How long does it take to learn Cherokee?

Cherokee sits in the Category IV range, with an estimated 1,500 hours or more to reach professional proficiency — among the most demanding languages for English speakers. The Cherokee syllabary takes a few weeks to master, and the polysynthetic verb system, which compresses entire sentences into a single highly inflected word, means the grammar remains challenging well beyond the beginner stage. Vocabulary offers no shortcuts from English, and the relatively limited availability of learning resources compared to major world languages adds a practical challenge. That said, the syllabary is phonetically consistent once learned, and the Cherokee Nation's active revitalisation efforts have significantly improved the quality and availability of materials in recent years. Memrise focuses lessons on high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners tackle the syllabary and core grammatical patterns progressively and build practical fluency steadily in one of North America's most culturally significant languages.
