Is Ancient Greek difficult to learn for English speakers?
Ancient Greek is considered challenging, sitting in a similar bracket to Latin but with added complexity. Like Latin it uses a case system, but Ancient Greek adds a third gender, a dual number (for referring to pairs), and an additional mood — the optative — that Latin lacks. The alphabet also requires learning from scratch, adding an early hurdle that Latin doesn't have. On the positive side, English contains a huge amount of Greek-derived vocabulary — democracy, philosophy, character, economy — which gives learners a meaningful head start on reading comprehension once the alphabet is mastered. How long does it take to learn Ancient Greek?
