The videos and tiktok esk side makes it fun to hear my target language and I love how they (for Japanese) focus on kanji and the answer has the furigana.

I don’t ever leave reviews.  Memrise provides natural speaking habits of your target language and works on listening skills in a way that no other app I’ve found does. I recently started Japanese and I can say that Memrise is great at all languages!

Is Ancient Greek difficult to learn for English speakers?

Ancient Greek is considered challenging, sitting in a similar bracket to Latin but with added complexity. Like Latin it uses a case system, but Ancient Greek adds a third gender, a dual number (for referring to pairs), and an additional mood — the optative — that Latin lacks. The alphabet also requires learning from scratch, adding an early hurdle that Latin doesn't have. On the positive side, English contains a huge amount of Greek-derived vocabulary — democracy, philosophy, character, economy — which gives learners a meaningful head start on reading comprehension once the alphabet is mastered. Memrise structures Ancient Greek learning around the core vocabulary and grammatical patterns that appear most frequently, so learners build a solid foundation before tackling the more complex features of the language.

How long does it take to learn Ancient Greek?

Ancient Greek is broadly comparable to Latin in difficulty, though most learners find it takes slightly longer due to the additional step of learning a new alphabet from scratch. Reaching the ability to read simple texts typically takes around one to two years of consistent study, with classical literature such as Plato or Homer becoming accessible after two to three years. The complexity of the case system and verb conjugations means early progress can feel slow, but the grammar is highly regular, which rewards patience. Memrise focuses lessons on the high-frequency vocabulary and core patterns that underpin most texts, giving learners a strong foundation to build from.
