The videos and tiktok esk side makes it fun to hear my target language and I love how they (for Japanese) focus on kanji and the answer has the furigana.

Is Malayalam difficult to learn for English speakers?
Malayalam is classified by the US Foreign Service Institute as a Category IV language, requiring around 2,200 hours to reach professional proficiency — among the most demanding languages for English speakers. It uses the Malayalam script, a distinctive rounded alphabet with over 50 characters and numerous conjunct consonant forms, which takes several weeks to master. Grammar is agglutinative and verb-final, with complex systems of noun cases, grammatical gender, and verb conjugations that vary by formality level — all structurally unfamiliar to English speakers. Vocabulary shares virtually no roots with English, though some loanwords exist from centuries of trade contact. That said, Malayalam pronunciation is phonetically consistent once the script is learned, and the grammar follows systematic rules throughout. Memrise structures Malayalam learning around high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners tackle the script and core patterns progressively rather than being overwhelmed from the start.
How long does it take to learn Malayalam?
Malayalam sits in the US Foreign Service Institute's Category IV, with an estimated 2,200 hours to reach professional proficiency — placing it alongside Burmese, Cantonese, and Khmer as one of the most time-intensive languages for English speakers. The Malayalam script, with its extensive character set and conjunct consonant forms, adds a significant early investment, and the agglutinative grammar and formality-inflected verb conjugations mean the learning curve remains steep well beyond the beginner stage. Vocabulary offers no shortcuts from English, meaning learners are building from scratch throughout. That said, the grammar follows highly systematic rules and pronunciation is consistent once the script is learned, which rewards patient, regular practice. Memrise focuses lessons on high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners tackle the script and core patterns progressively and build practical fluency steadily over what is inevitably a long-term journey.
