The videos and tiktok esk side makes it fun to hear my target language and I love how they (for Japanese) focus on kanji and the answer has the furigana.
vianewsonI don’t ever leave reviews. Memrise provides natural speaking habits of your target language and works on listening skills in a way that no other app I’ve found does. I recently started Japanese and I can say that Memrise is great at all languages!

Is Maltese difficult to learn for English speakers?
Maltese is one of the most linguistically unique languages for English speakers — it is the only Semitic language written in a Latin-based alphabet and an official EU language, making it more accessible than Arabic or Hebrew in one key respect. Its grammar has Semitic roots, with a root-and-pattern system where meaning is built by inserting vowels into consonantal roots, but centuries of contact with Italian, Sicilian, and English have layered in a large amount of familiar vocabulary — English speakers will recognise words immediately. That said, the Semitic grammatical core, including broken plurals where the entire word changes rather than adding a suffix, and verb conjugations that vary by gender and number, takes sustained effort to internalise. Memrise structures Maltese learning around high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners take advantage of the familiar vocabulary while building practical familiarity with the Semitic grammar progressively.
How long does it take to learn Maltese?
Maltese has no official US Foreign Service Institute rating, but is broadly estimated to require 900 to 1,100 hours to reach professional proficiency — placing it in the Category II to III range. The Semitic grammatical core, including broken plurals and gender-inflected verb conjugations, takes sustained effort to internalise, but the large Italian, Sicilian, and English vocabulary overlay means reading comprehension develops faster than with most Semitic languages. English speakers in particular will find familiar footholds throughout the vocabulary, which accelerates early progress. Memrise focuses lessons on high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners take advantage of the familiar vocabulary while building practical familiarity with the Semitic grammar steadily.
