The videos and tiktok esk side makes it fun to hear my target language and I love how they (for Japanese) focus on kanji and the answer has the furigana.
vianewsonI don’t ever leave reviews. Memrise provides natural speaking habits of your target language and works on listening skills in a way that no other app I’ve found does. I recently started Japanese and I can say that Memrise is great at all languages!

Is Māori difficult to learn for English speakers?
Māori is considered moderately challenging for English speakers — it shares no vocabulary with English and its grammar is structured quite differently, using a verb-initial sentence order and a system of particles to indicate tense and relationships between words rather than verb conjugations or noun cases. That said, the grammar is relatively streamlined once the core particles are learned, and the language has no grammatical gender and no complex case system. Pronunciation is consistent and phonetically straightforward, with only 15 sounds in total. Cultural context adds depth to the learning journey, as Māori is deeply tied to New Zealand history and identity. Memrise structures Māori learning around high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners build a practical foundation in the language progressively.
How long does it take to learn Māori?
Māori has no official US Foreign Service Institute rating, but is broadly estimated to require 600 to 900 hours to reach conversational proficiency — comparable to other Polynesian languages. The verb-initial grammar and particle system take time to internalise, and the lack of shared vocabulary with English means learners must build from scratch. On the positive side, pronunciation is highly consistent with only 15 sounds, and the grammar has no verb conjugations or noun cases, which removes significant complexity. Memrise focuses lessons on high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners build a practical foundation in Māori steadily and progressively.
