The videos and tiktok esk side makes it fun to hear my target language and I love how they (for Japanese) focus on kanji and the answer has the furigana.

I don’t ever leave reviews.  Memrise provides natural speaking habits of your target language and works on listening skills in a way that no other app I’ve found does. I recently started Japanese and I can say that Memrise is great at all languages!

Is Burmese difficult to learn for English speakers?

Burmese is classified by the US Foreign Service Institute as a Category IV language, requiring around 2,200 hours to reach professional proficiency — among the most demanding languages for English speakers. It uses the Burmese script, a distinctive circular alphabet derived from an ancient Indian writing system, which takes several weeks to master. The language is tonal, with four tones that change the meaning of a word entirely, and its grammar is verb-final and structurally unfamiliar, with particles rather than word order carrying much of the grammatical meaning. Vocabulary shares no roots with English. That said, Burmese grammar has no verb conjugations for person or number, and the tonal system, while challenging, is smaller than Cantonese or Mandarin. Memrise structures Burmese learning around high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners tackle the script and tones progressively rather than being overwhelmed from the start.

How long does it take to learn Burmese?

Burmese sits in the US Foreign Service Institute's Category IV, with an estimated 2,200 hours to reach professional proficiency — placing it alongside Cantonese and Khmer as one of the most time-intensive languages for English speakers. The Burmese script, four tones, and verb-final grammar all require sustained investment, and vocabulary offers no shortcuts from English. That said, Burmese grammar has no conjugations for person or number, which removes a layer of complexity present in many other Category IV languages, and the tonal system is smaller than Cantonese or Mandarin. Memrise focuses lessons on high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners tackle the script and tones progressively and build practical fluency steadily over what is inevitably a long-term journey.
