Is Sanskrit difficult to learn for English speakers?
Sanskrit is considered one of the most challenging classical languages for English speakers, broadly comparable to Ancient Greek in difficulty but with greater grammatical complexity. It uses the Devanagari script, which takes several weeks to master, and its grammar is extraordinarily detailed — eight noun cases, three grammatical genders, three numbers (singular, dual, plural), and an intricate system of verb conjugations and sandhi rules that govern how sounds change at word boundaries. That said, Sanskrit is the ancestral root of a large portion of English vocabulary through the Indo-European family, meaning occasional words feel familiar, and its grammar, while demanding, is highly systematic and logical. Memrise structures Sanskrit learning around high-frequency vocabulary and core grammatical patterns, helping learners build a solid foundation progressively rather than being overwhelmed by the full complexity at once.
How long does it take to learn Sanskrit?
