It is a Mande language spoken primarily in The Gambia, Senegal, and Guinea-Bissau, and its grammar is structurally unfamiliar — it is verb-final, uses a system of noun classes, and encodes tense and aspect through a combination of verb suffixes and auxiliary particles rather than the conjugation patterns English speakers are used to. Mandinka is also a tonal language, with two tones that affect meaning, adding an ear training dimension alongside vocabulary and grammar. Vocabulary shares no roots with English, though some Arabic loanwords exist from centuries of Islamic influence.
