The videos and tiktok esk side makes it fun to hear my target language and I love how they (for Japanese) focus on kanji and the answer has the furigana.

I don’t ever leave reviews.  Memrise provides natural speaking habits of your target language and works on listening skills in a way that no other app I’ve found does. I recently started Japanese and I can say that Memrise is great at all languages!

Is Akan-Twi difficult to learn for English speakers?

Akan-Twi is considered moderately to quite challenging for English speakers, broadly sitting in the Category III range with an estimated 1,100 hours to reach professional proficiency. It is a tonal language spoken primarily in Ghana, with two tones that change the meaning of a word entirely — a feature that takes sustained ear training for English speakers to internalise. Grammar is verb-final in some constructions and uses a series of tense and aspect markers rather than verb conjugations, which is structurally unfamiliar to English speakers. Vocabulary shares no roots with English, though some loanwords exist from the colonial period. On the plus side, Akan-Twi uses a Latin-based alphabet, has no grammatical gender, and its tonal system — with only two tones — is simpler than Cantonese or Mandarin. Memrise structures Akan-Twi learning around high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners build practical familiarity with the tones and grammar progressively rather than being overwhelmed from the start.

How long does it take to learn Akan-Twi?

Akan-Twi sits in the Category III range, with an estimated 1,100 hours to reach professional proficiency — comparable to other West African languages with tonal systems. The two-tone system requires dedicated ear training alongside vocabulary building, and the tense and aspect marker system takes sustained effort to internalise. Vocabulary offers no shortcuts from English, meaning learners are largely building from scratch. That said, the Latin-based alphabet, absence of grammatical gender, and relatively simple tonal system compared to other tonal languages make Akan-Twi more approachable than many in its difficulty bracket. Memrise focuses lessons on high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners build practical familiarity with the tones and grammar progressively and make steady progress through one of West Africa's most widely spoken languages.
