The videos and tiktok esk side makes it fun to hear my target language and I love how they (for Japanese) focus on kanji and the answer has the furigana.

Is Soninke difficult to learn for English speakers?
Soninke is considered moderately to quite challenging for English speakers, broadly sitting in the Category III range with an estimated 1,100 hours to reach professional proficiency. It is a Mande language spoken primarily across the Sahel region — Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, and The Gambia — and like other Mande languages its grammar is structurally unfamiliar, with verb-final sentence order, a noun class system, and tense and aspect marked through auxiliary particles and verb suffixes rather than the conjugation patterns English speakers are used to. Soninke is also a tonal language, with two tones that affect meaning, adding an ear training dimension alongside vocabulary and grammar. Vocabulary shares no roots with English, though some Arabic and French loanwords exist from centuries of Islamic and colonial influence. On the plus side, Soninke uses a Latin-based alphabet and its two-tone system is simpler than most tonal languages. Memrise structures Soninke learning around high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners build practical familiarity with the tones and grammar progressively rather than being overwhelmed from the start.
How long does it take to learn Soninke?
Soninke sits in the Category III range, with an estimated 1,100 hours to reach professional proficiency — comparable to other Mande languages like Mandinka and Wolof. The two-tone system requires dedicated ear training alongside vocabulary building, and the verb-final grammar and noun class system take sustained effort to internalise. Vocabulary offers no shortcuts from English beyond occasional Arabic and French loanwords. That said, the Latin-based alphabet removes the script hurdle, and the two-tone system — simpler than most tonal languages — becomes more manageable with regular practice. Memrise focuses lessons on high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners build practical familiarity with the tones and grammar progressively and make steady progress through one of the Sahel's most widely spoken languages.
