The videos and tiktok esk side makes it fun to hear my target language and I love how they (for Japanese) focus on kanji and the answer has the furigana.
vianewsonI don’t ever leave reviews. Memrise provides natural speaking habits of your target language and works on listening skills in a way that no other app I’ve found does. I recently started Japanese and I can say that Memrise is great at all languages!

Is Kurdish difficult to learn for English speakers?
Kurdish is considered moderately to quite difficult for English speakers, though the challenge varies depending on the dialect — Kurmanji (Northern Kurdish) and Sorani (Central Kurdish) are the two most widely spoken and differ significantly from each other. Both belong to the Indo-Iranian branch of Indo-European languages, meaning some vocabulary has distant roots shared with English, but the overlap is minimal in practice. Kurdish grammar includes verb conjugations, grammatical gender in Kurmanji, and an ergative construction in past tenses that has no equivalent in English. On the plus side, Kurdish uses a Latin-based alphabet in Kurmanji and a modified Arabic script in Sorani, with Kurmanji being the more accessible starting point for most English speakers. Memrise structures Kurdish learning around high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, building a practical foundation in the language progressively.
How long does it take to learn Kurdish?
Kurdish doesn't have an official US Foreign Service Institute rating, but it is broadly estimated to sit in the Category III to IV range, requiring upwards of 1,000 hours to reach professional proficiency. The choice of dialect matters significantly — Kurmanji's Latin-based alphabet makes it more accessible for English speakers than Sorani's Arabic script, which adds a separate learning curve. Vocabulary offers few shortcuts from English, and the ergative past-tense construction takes time to internalise. Memrise focuses lessons on high-frequency vocabulary and everyday phrases, helping learners build a practical foundation in Kurdish steadily and progressively.
