So! Time to bust some myths and share some secrets. What is the best way to learn Russian? Let’s find out!

We don’t want to say how long is a piece of string, but this can vary wildly. But we think the most effective, in fact the best way to learn Russian, is to first tackle the Cyrillic alphabet.

Once you’ve got that down, you’ll find it’s pretty quick. How long it takes for you to familiarise yourself with an alphabet that’s new to you is really the question.

There are 33 letters in the Russian alphabet. Six (A, E, K, M, O, and T) look and sound the same as they do in English. Twelve sounds you’ll know too, but will need to match them to a new symbol.

The remaining 15 letters are actually one of the aesthetic reasons to learn Russian. They’re so beautiful! Take this one: Ж. Lovely, huh? It’s called ‘zhe’ and sounds like the s in pleasure. Very apt!

So, how long does it take to learn Russian? Not too long if you’re dedicated to learning and practise often. Little and often, recalling what you’ve learnt and adding a bit more. That’s how to learn Russian fast.

We said that the best way to learn Russian is to learn the alphabet first. This is because Russian is a mostly phonetic language. From mid-March, all courses created by Memrise users will be moved to a new sister website called Decks by Memrise. Here's what you need to know:

Memrise will only house our official language courses after the move.

We're moving all community-created courses over to a new website and mobile app called Decks.

Your login details for Memrise will work for Decks.

You won't lose any of your learning progress, it will be migrated to Decks.  This includes words learned, points, leaderboard positions, and streak.

We work as a team, but we play as a team too, with regular company socials, inspiring talks and language lunches once a week, not to mention the boxing, meditation, yoga, language lessons and painting classes that happen on site too.

Our growing team has lived in wonderful spaces within London that foster curiosity, collaboration and persistent pursuit of excellence. 

For 6 and a bit glorious years, our offices were located in a converted chapel in the borders of the Hackney and Tower Hamlets boroughs.

Since then, we have moved around East London’s magnificently diverse and historical space - home of the Suffragette movement headquarters and turf of the infamous Jack the Ripper; a place rich in Jewish, Irish and Bengali history and culture.

We’re a team of 75 people (and counting!) who speak over 45 languages between us. 

We are a curious bunch, passionate about the world and about changing the landscape of language learning. We celebrate richness and variety of languages, thought, culture, and people.

We are based in the magnificently diverse and historical East London – home of the Suffragette headquarters and turf of the infamous Jack the Ripper; a place rich in Jewish, Irish and Bengali history and culture.

At our brand new office, we are powered by healthy (but delicious!) snacks, can chill in a meditation pod, and sometimes bring our dogs to work. We hold regular talks on languages and brain science, as well as team lunches, company socials, quizzes, and loads of other fun events.
