Avant-garde
Military term. Refers to the troops that are sent to open a battle. They regroup the bravest soldiers – and the ones more likely to die fast.
Arriere-garde
The soldiers who stay at the back of the fighting troops and defend the army’s positions.
Bourgeois
Always used in derogatory fashion. The enemy of art and epitome of conformism.

Adherence to and respect for high art, especially from the Antiquity. Respect for artistic norms passed on since then.
