What is a transformation?
A transformation is an operation that maps an original figure onto a new figure called the image.
Translation, reflection, rotation, and dilation.
Name 4 common forms of transformations.
What is a translation?
A translation is when you slide a figure from side to side without turning it or changing it's shape or size. Every point in the original figure is moved the same distance and in…
What is a reflection?
A reflection is when you flip a figure over a line, called the line of symmetry. The figures are mirror images of each other. The size and the shape of the figure do not change.
What is a rotation?
A rotation is when a figure is turned 90 degrees, 180 degrees, 270 degrees, 360 degrees either clockwise (cw) or counterclockwise (ccw). The size and shape of the figure do not change.
What is a dilation?
A dilation is when a figure is reduced or enlarged.
When a figure is transformed using dilation, what happens to the coordinates in each ordered pair?
The coordinates for each ordered pair in the original figure is multiplied by the scale factor to create the new coordinates to graph the dilated image.
We use the scale factor to determine how to re-size original figure.
When a figure is being transformed using dilation, what do we use to determine how to re-size the original figure?
A scale factor less than one will reduce a figure.
Will a scale factor LESS THAN one enlarge or reduce a figure?
A scale factor greater than one will enlarge a figure.
Will a scale factor GREATER THAN one enlarge or reduce a figure?
If a figure is transformed using rotation, does the size and shape of the figure change?
No, the size and shape of the figure do not change if a figure is only transformed using rotation.
If a figure is transformed using reflection, does the size and shape of the figure change?
No, the size and shape of the figure do not change if a figure is only transformed using reflection.
If a figure is transformed using translation, does the size and shape of the figure change?
No, the size and shape of the figure do not change if a figure is only transformed using translation.
The FL in reflection is for FLIPPED!
What does the FL in reflection stand for?
What is the SL in translation for?
The SL in translation is for SLIDE.
How far is a 90 degree turn?
A 90 degree turn is a 1/4 or quarter turn.
How far is a 180 degree turn?
A 180 degree turn is a 1/2 or half turn.
How far is a 270 degree turn?
A 270 degree turn is a 3/4 or three quarter turn.
How far is a 360 degree turn?
A 360 degree turn is a full turn.
