In the last week, everyone has washed and cleaned for Christmas.
Cecilie has bought a lot of Christmas decorations, and now there are decorations in every room and Christmas flowers everywhere.
Det står til og med en nisse på do!
There is even a Santa in the bathroom!
In the living room is a big Christmas tree with glitter, red Christmas balls, and Norwegian flags.
The first time Ben saw a flag on the Christmas tree, he thought it was very strange.
Det bruker man ikke i Frankrike
People don't use it in France.
The family has celebrated Christmas in Norway before, but it is the first time that they are at home in their own house.
Å, det dufter så herlig av ribba
Oh, it smells so wonderfully of ribs.
Jeg er så sulten!
I am so hungry!
Yes, I am glad I decided on ribs.
I thought long about what I should serve:
...cured-lamb-ribs or cod or lutefisk, but Ben said that he would like to have pork ribs.
Og barna liker det også
And the children like it too.
Så derfor ble det ribbe
So therefor it became ribs.
I am a little skeptical of lutefisk, it is a strange dish.
Ribs with beer and aquavit are much better.
Jeg er helt enig
I completely agree.
Vær så god alle sammen. Maten er klar!
There you go, everyone. The food is ready!
De setter seg ved bordet
They sit at the table.
Ben lifts the glass, toasts, and wishes everyone welcome to the table.
Then they help themselves to ribs, potatoes and all the good that Cecilie has put on the table.
Inger and Anders tell about Christmas in the old days, and Ben tells about how people celebrate Christmas in France.
Alex is not so very interested, he thinks most of the presents under the Christmas.
Etter ribba er det dessert
After ribs it is dessert.
Cecilie serves the caramel pudding she always got when she was a child.
Hun liker tradisjoner
She likes traditions.
Thanks for the food, it was a wonderful dinner!
Vel bekomme!
I'm glad you liked it!/You're welcome! (The former is a very loose translation of a formulaic response.)
Nå er jeg virkelig god og mett
Now I am truly good and full.
And the caramel pudding was at least as good as grandmother's!
Ja, det var virkelig godt
Yes, it was truly good.
Norwegian ribs are wonderful, and no one is so good at making ribs as Cecilie!
Og puddingen var virkelig en overraskelse!
And the pudding was indeed a surprise!
Now you can go and sit, and I will clear the table.
Etterpå skal vi sove middag
Afterwards, we can have an after-dinner-nap.
Nei, det kan vi ikke!
No, we can't do that!
Vi skal åpne pakkene!
We will open the packages!
Nei, i Norge sover man alltid middag på julaften
No, in Norway, you always have an after-dinner-nap on Christmas Eve.
Then there is coffee, and then open you open packages.
Ikke sant, morfar?
Isn't that right grandmother?
Jo, slik er det i Norge
Yes, that's how it is in Norway.
Man sover minst en time på julaften
You sleep at least one hour on Christmas Eve.
Men …
But...
Ta det med ro, Alex
Take it easy, Alex.
De tuller bare
They're just kidding.
