Hawaiian Pidgin English is the lingua franca of the Hawaiian islands. A mixture of Hawaiian and English, Hawaiian Pidgin English borrows words from a host of other languages, such as Japanese, Chinese, Okinawan, Tagalog, Ilocano, Portuguese, and others. Once considered a pidgin, it has been upgraded to an official language.
