Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, 1859-1923, French.Steinlen was a prolific magazine illustrator who also used his work to highlight social inequities.The Chat Noir poster illustration above is perhaps the one for which Steinlen is best known, and just one of his many cat paintings, drawings and sculptures.

One of the great Dutch artists, Vermeer is today possibly best known for his portrait of a young woman which became the subject of the novel and movie "Girl With a Pearl Earring". This was typical of the domestic scenes that are featured in his work.
He is noted for his use of perspective and tonal contrast (chiaroscuro) which enabled him to achieve a level of realism that was groundbreaking.
