Hi Jennifer,
Well, people had been asking for a way to communicate and now we've got it. Pretty cool. Karen

Well, I don't think I've ever noticed any edit comments (probably that was common), so the wall would definitely be the way to go.

Hi Jennifer,
Not sure if you get an email if I reply to you on my own wall (do you? please let me know if it works that way), so I pasted it here because I do know it emails to you from your own wall.

Since you asked for it... in the 5000 words in spanish -
ciento/cien = the meaning is one hundred - not hundreds of (ciento de)

el particular = while it can mean private - the more general term would be something like the particular male object (masculine pronoun - el) like "sobre el particular" - would translate roughly to about this matter/concerning this matter not about the private individual. Another example : La lengua tal como la usa el individuo particular - Language as used by the individual/ the language as the particular individual uses.

karenbarker - I can't edit the 5000 words in spanish list. I can only edit the Karen's Topic - Spanish list, because that's the one that I've been compiling as I learn.
I have cien = one hundred on my list. I was told that you use ciento before MOST other numbers - like ciento cinquenta = 150. Right now I only have ciento used in a number that I originally got from the main wiki (144,000), but I'll have to try to find out the exact rules on ciento before I enter it in as a word by itself. I like to have lots of information with my words, which is why Ben has me separated from the main wiki. I hate one-word definitions. (grin)
A spanish-speaking friend told me you also use cien , not ciento, before thousand, million, etc., but at the time I didn't think to ask for an example so I'm not clear on that. Does that mean 100,000 = cien mil?

Don't know if I have el particular on my list or not, but I'll check. It's funny that some of my spanish-speaking friends disagree on stuff, depending on where they are from. Just last week - mona apparently means monkey here, but in South America (forget which country he was visiting from) it apparently means cute. Mona Monica turned out not to be a compliment. (smile) Makes me think if they don't all know this stuff, how am I supposed to? (laugh) It's an adventure.

Cool.
Um, Basically learning the basic kana just takes a focused couple weeks of brute memorization. I really would recommend printing out one of the many free charts you can find online. Assuming you aren't coming to Japan soon, definitely do Hiragana first, then Katakana.

I haven't used the memrise kana section, but under the part of "Japanese for English speakers" there is a practice section for kana too. Once you have even a loose grasp on it, jump into one of the beginner sections (or a JLPT N5 list) and it'll just come with practice.

I hope that helps, though it is basically saying nothing. :/

If you carry a small printout of the syllabary (character chart) with you everywhere you go, you'll get it down quick!

I appreciated your comment on Mandarin tones. It helped me understand some of the limitations of Memrise.
