I came across several words with 'jarse'...enamojarse, enojarse, quejarse and I was wondering if 'jarse' in itself had a praticular meaning that is modified by whatever is put in front of it?

Should we specify on these lists whether we're teaching Spanish (Spain) or Spanish (Latin America)? I'm doing "introductory spanish" and literally 20% of these words and their definitions are exclusively Spain'ish and are non-intuitive for me, as a Spanish teacher in California. I know how to address this is a neverending question on all sites, but should be addressed and may be a fun springboard for discussion here.
- Many sites have "Spanish (Spain)" as a separate language from "Spanish (Latin America)."
- Others simply say "Spanish (Spain)" is "real" is some purist sense.
- Others say "Spanish (Latin America)" has 10x the number of speakers and all the economic progress and is therefore the language people learn when they say "Spanish."
- Still others pick a neutral dialect behind the scenes. Columbian is the most universal--I'd personally recommend Chilean to anyone learning Spanish over most any other dialect (and I'm Cuban.)

In the current form of the conventions for spanish the plan is to put "LA" or "SP" as well as a few other more local variations, into the "special information" field. I suggest that some dialect-specific wordsets would be a good route to go down. So maybe a "Latin American Spanish" introduction as well. YES YES YES, PLEASE PLEASE do make a difference between latin american spanish and Spain spanish ( AKA castellano/castillian etc). AS a beginner spanish speaker I can absolutely 100% verify this is a nightmare for us learners the reason being most "spanish" apps or websites and even books just DONT list what type of spanish it is....this is VERY confusing for a beginner.... it leaves us having to guess which is which and when i practice on skype with native speakers they get confused too becuase I find myself mixing latin american spanish and spain spanish, the differences are subtle but noticable on vocab etc...the word for "car" is different for example and it really does mess up things especially becuase I am not advanced.... btw I love memrise and am learning spain spanish so please offer a spain spanish course! I love my latin american counterparts but I wanna learn spain spanish first then move onto the sublteties of latin american variants etc. Also if memrise does make this distinction you will be massively cool and way better than the other language learning sites! p.s if the artist in residence/philospher position is still open please let me know! I wanna join!

Maybe there should be courses started stating the unique vocabulary in each country; for those who are travelling to a specific country and want to learn the colloquialisms. For example, "cachai?" and "cacho" are essential to learn in Chile. Also "chucha".

I agree it's very important to know which one you're listening to, but I don't think we need to go insulting people because of where they're from.

and in what order? I've started out with "Exito de venta" (Spanish Idioms), "First 5,000 Words of Spanish", and "Introductory Spanish". There are so many courses to choose from, so I'd like to know from the advanced/proficent learners of Spanish here, which courses you recommend, in order from beginners to advanced. Thank you for your help!

I would not do introductory spanish if I were you, it is a sprinkling of words from different subjects, and won't do well as a foundation. Focus on either top 5000 or top 1000 first, because those are the words that you are going to need to understand most sentence structure. Also, depending on where you plan to do your speaking, there are a few classes created by people who learned by travelling to different regions. So those will help you get familiar with regional terms ( the words which have sexual connotations, in particular, vary vastly from place to place )

I went through easy ones, "100+ Most Common Words in Spanish" & "At the Restaurant". Now working on, "First 1000 words of Spanish" & "Introductory Spanish" and of course my personal set, "Body Parts (Outter)". All pretty good except for the fact they "teach" Spanish from Spain, not Latino Spanish.

I find "Introductory Spanish" pretty bad indeed: a lot of completely useless words and also the translation are not correct!! For example the Spanish words are all with an article before but not in English so for example "drink" should be "a drink" or "to drink" : this is very upsetting!!
There should be a way to vote or like a course and give negative feedback on others (and then those courses after too much bad feedback should disappear...)
Am just a noob os feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

As for the articles in the English version there is a convention on Memrise to not use them. How do you know the difference between drink noun and verb? At the top, over the word, you can see a N or a V, sometimes during testing it can be frustrating indeed and I have made numerous mistakes.

Correction: the To of verbs is already there so you might have found one where it was missing. You can put a comment in Discuss Item from the gray menu and Ben is extremely fast at correcting mistakes in sets.

Thanks for pointing out where I can comment on the Course.
There is inconsistency in how the words are presented to us since they have an article in Spanish and not in English, for example "La Playa" is "Beach" instead of the "the beach", this is confusing as sometimes they do include the articles.

@alias8, the convention in the Spanish wiki is to always add the Spanish word with the definite article because that helps to learn the gender. But the English word is added without the definite article. I know that this seems inconsistent, but the reason is that in English the definite article doesn't change, and adding it to every noun just serves to make the words look more similar which therefore makes them harder to learn. The Spanish word without the definite article should be added as an "alternative Spanish" which means that you shouldn't be marked wrong for writing that. If you are, then please leave a comment on the word and that will be fixed ASAP.

Exito de Venta is certainly south American Spanish, though most of the phrases work in Spain too. I really don't think it makes any sense for beginners to worry about which version they're learning.

Learning English from U.K. i.e. a windscreen and from U.S.A. e.i windshield is indeed no biggy. It's very easy later on to switch one for the other.
When it comes to learning Spanish from Spain or from central/south America it's a different ballgame. Not only some words are different but also pronunciation rules are. Once a "pronunciation" is learned it is very difficult to switch to another for the same words. Take the pronunciation rules for "G" as an example.

- If G comes before the letters e or i, the sound is the same as that of the Spanish J.
Works for American Spanish but it seems in Spain it's not always applied.

If you've got a good grasp of Spanish, 'Spanish Vocab - Advanced' is a fantastic course. Really good mix of relevant vocab, I think it deserves more attention (its quite far down the list).

Hola Alias8...Regarding your post about confusion with "la playa" vs "playa," the way I understand it is that the direct translation of beach is playa. But when you use the word in a sentence you ALWAYS use its definite article. And the article MUST match the gender of the noun. Therefore, it is necessary to learn the noun's definite article as well as the definition.
So the definition of beach is playa. You use it in a sentence as, "Vamos a la playa."

here I will quote something I read today below and my question is, can we have some courses based on these word frequencies so we start to learn stuff we can use right away....for example the first 250..then 750 etc etc...there are word lists out there that list the actual words, it makes sense to learn the most frequent words first then we can start reading basic stories and newspapers and conversations, what do ya think? This is an excellent idea, and something that we have introduced in several languages - in Spanish we already have a list of the first 1000 words and the first 5,000 words, but those are not such compelling learning chunks as these. I really like those summary numbers of how to break it down into bite sized pieces with set goals for that level - as he says, the numbers vary from source to source, but those seem like a good general sense of it. We will have a serious think about how to incorporate these ideas effectively.

It would be ideal if you could send in a cv as well though, that would help to work out how you might fit into the environment. Also are you/ can you be based in London?

Hi! Sorry, I don't understand what's required here, even when I clicked on "help" I still wasn't sure. Does it mean we have to make a direct and literal translation word for word even though it might mean the English sentence is wrong grammatically? [Do] [you] [square] [off] [each] [word] [like] [this]? [Or square off the whole sentence]? Can someone show me some examples of it done correctly?

Sorry that this isn't clear - we certainly need to improve the instructions. The English translation should be a normal translation, not literal, word by word. But the English word (and the Target language sentence) need to contain the word that is being tested in the form that it appears in the wiki entry.
eg if it is a verb in the infinitive form, then the sentence must contain the verb in the infinitive form. The test will will run off the same answers as the normal typing test, so we need to make it so that you can type the same answer and get marked right.
So no conjugated forms of verbs etc, at least at the moment. We will add that on in version 2.
Does that make more sense? Please let me know if not!

I'm now working with very long lists and would like to control the order I encounter new words. Two common situations are: 1) when I encounter a word like tejido (fabric) and want to also have the verb it's based on (tejer - to weave) since I find it much easier to learn them together and 2) when I encounter a word elsewhere in the world and want to take advantage of reinforcing that memory.

Thank you for this - at the moment you can edit the order of words in courses that you have created, but not of courses that other people have created. So one way to do it would be to create a copy of the course that you are learning (by downloading the spreadsheet of words, then creating a new course, and uploading the same words to that course). Then you would be able to drag and drop the words into the order that you wanted.
But that is not a slick solution. We are going to make a much better system for letting you control what you focus on and how you learn. that will come in the next couple of months. Thank you for this - at the moment you can edit the order of words in courses that you have created, but not of courses that other people have created. So one way to do it would be to create a copy of the course that you are learning (by downloading the spreadsheet of words, then creating a new course, and uploading the same words to that course). Then you would be able to drag and drop the words into the order that you wanted.
But that is not a slick solution. We are going to make a much better system for letting you control what you focus on and how you learn. that will come in the next couple of months. It is very useful to have those use cases - they will help us enormously to design the tools so that they will be as effective as possible.

So what this says is that in the word list for Spanish comprehension, "Cerro" was translated as "Mount", but in the dictionaries I looked it up in, "Hill" was a better translation and I also asked some native speakers. Say, if you were talking about a restaurant: Tengo muchas ganas de ir al restaurante de comida mexicana! or if you were talking about watching a film: Tengo muchas ganas de ir a verla!

Thanks for your response. I didn't express my original post properly though. I do know how to use tener ganas however I found 'tengo muchas ganas de ir!' translated as 'I'm looking forward to it!'. This translation seems wrong unless it is a local expression so my question applies to that particular expression.

I think I'm looking forward to it is a more suitable translation than I crave going for it, since that particular expression of tengo muchas ganas de ir refers to attending a place or event, and I really feel like going works as well. Doing a bit more research online and with a few friends from Spain I've learned that the expression is indeed used in many spanish speaking countries in the same way, and the translation to english is not literal but depends on what you are referring to.

last night (for me), I posted a comment on "saber" requesting a slight change to the definition in order to differentiate the meaning from the word "conocer". Today, I noticed that it had already been changed but the discussion point that had initiated the change was missing. I know that I've looked at discussion points in the past, and I've learned a thing or two. Please reset the system (if it is a system error). If I have selected to use "Moderated" words, there should be a way to advise the moderator that a meme or word contains inappropriate or offensive content.

This is a very good point, and one that we are working on. We are going to introduce ways to rate and tag mems for their different qualities - with "offensive" being one such tag. The thing is that offensive mems *can* be the most effective, for those that are happy to use them, and so we are reluctant to just remove them. But at the same time people who don't want to be offended should not have to see them. We will get this feature added as soon as possible.

Yes, that is a very good idea - if we can get "tagging" for mems, then you could definitely tag a mem when you are creating it. May is scheduled to be out time for focusing on these kinds of features, so hopefully we can get this done soon,

It's clear that there's a lot of cleaning up going on, and usually that's a good thing. But lately while watering a few words that were learned several months ago, I've had a few occasiona where the definition seems to have altered so much that it gave me pause for thought, or even tripped me up.
In general, this is just something we need to live with, because of the way the wiki works.
But there have been a few that seemed to be misleading. Up to now I've just shrugged and accepted it - what do I know about the nuances of Spanish?
But from now on I'm going to try and take the time to check them out.
Here's one that doesn't seem right.
viejo - now translates as - old (sense of degradation)
Is this reasonable? If I want to say that a relative is now old, should I use the word antiguo?
If I say someone is viejo am I implying that they are a crone or a degenerate?
If so, what about el viejo and la vieja?

You shouldn't use "antiguo" to describe a person, it is instead used to describe objects or a long gone era, you can relate it with the word "antique" if that helps you. so you would, for example, say "ese reloj es muy antiguo" for "that watch is really old".

In my experience that sense of degradation becomes attached to the word when used in conjunction with certain adjectives, say "el viejo pelado" which would translate to something like "cheeky man, or "vieja grosera" for "rude woman". So the phrase "el viejo es mi abuelo" is just descriptive and not demeaning.
On another note, is there an entry for "viejo" as an adjective rather than a noun? I couldn't locate any.

i guess really the connotations of viejo are much like those of "old" in English. You can use it insultingly - "you old fool" - or neutrally - "I am getting old" - or even affectionately - "old man" used to be a term of friendship.
Interestingly "young" can be used in much the same ways.
(Except the neutral example would violate entropy or at any rate isn't achievable in the current state of medical science)

I know it's a huge favour but can a native speaker spend an hour or two doing whole audio for 5000 words spanish? I started Intro but couldn't do because not enough audio didnt learn. Doing First 1000 wiki which is great every word has audio but when finished want to do 5000. Would be awesome karma thanks

Set the speaker to one of the Spanish speakers (There are two from Europe and one from South America) and type in the word or phrase, then press play. I've never known it to make a mistake. If you type in some English words with an English speaker you'll see what a great job they do.
Another alternative might be to record a couple of thousand English audios yourself, and hope that the "karma" makes its way back to you.

Another thing is that Spanish spelling, unlike English, is very very consistent. There are spelling rules and once you learn them you can pronounce absolutely any word just by looking at it and reading it.

I think it's a good idea to use the resources that are available to you already while you are waiting, but it's up to you if you want to wait.
LiveMocha is a good site for pronunciation development as you can read a paragraph at the end of every lesson and a native speaker will correct your pronunciation mistakes for you.

@RabbitWho, we have got a pretty fast system for mass adding audio - see http://www.memrise.com/faq/... - it should take about 1.5 -2 seconds per word. Then you just press save and send me the file, or put it in a dropbox folder for me. You should be able to record 1000 words in half an hour pretty comfortably in my experience. so If anyone does know native speakers, then they can get involved without too much effort and it is hugely appreciated.
We are going to be building much better tools for this though, for a variety of reasons. For example we want to test from sample sentences (very soon) and we need a way to record audio for those very easily and we want to be able to tag each recording with the accent of the speaker, so that people can choose the accents that they want to hear. This is coming down the line.

Also you could have a box on the side that said something like "hey! you're a native X speaker I see! Would you record this word for us?" and then people could do one every now and then without even giving it a second thought.

Yes I did and found them a little too "mechanic", not enough intonations. I tried all French voices and they pretty much sounded as if I was talking to someone in my family, except of course too proper. All speakers tend to chew words in their language.

Well the native Spanish speakers I showed the Spanish voices to were impressed, I guess they're not so fussy! hee hee. I'm really impressed by the English ones myself, I recommend it to all my students to help them with their pronunciation. One of the voices couldn't pronounce "bear" (it said "beer") I forget which one, but all the others were perfect.

Is this possible? If I want my list to include some words translated into English but other words with Spanish definitions is it possible to change which category the individual words go into rather than having them all go into "Spanish" the spanish-english wiki automatically?

I'm afraid that this isn't possible at the moment - all words that are in lists in the Spanish topic need to have definitions in English. The Spanish definition could be put in as a "mem" if that would help? In future it would be great to be able to select which language you want the definition in, but I'm afraid that that isn't going to happen very soon.

The problem is the only time you see a mem is when you get the word wrong. Constantly translating words into or from English isn't going to allow me to read or speak at any great speed, not to mention the fact that most words don't have exact translations.

Yes, I agree that once you reach a certain level at a language it would be best not to translate. We will at some point implement this, but I'm afraid that it will take a little while to get done because it is a complex issue on many levels.
However the sentence testing that we will be implementing soon will, I hope, help you to improve at reading in the target language. Then we will try to get the richer definitions implemented as soon as we can.

I have recently noticed that several words have had their translations changed, and to incorrect ones. In all cases, the english has been changed to a word which sounds much more similar to the spanish, but does not mean the same. That is odd - and whoever edited it had not left a comment, which makes it hard to track. I have edited it back. In the new wiki infrastructure this sort of thing will not be able to happen so easily, so this should only be a short term issue. In the meantime if you can leave a comment on any word that has become incorrect I will get it fixed.

Please check wordreference PLUS one other dictionary to make sure they match, I've noticed a lot of mistakes on the English-Spanish Spanish-English word reference, though the Spanish definition page is always right, of course it is of no use to beginners unfortunately.

Yes, good suggestion RabbitWho. I usually check two to three sources (spanishdict.com/wordref/oxford spanish). However, I would argue that dictionaries tend to be more accurate than people. If I could get a nickle, or even a penny, for every person who improperly uses the word good and well or should and could, I would be the richest person in the world.

English Dictionaries, unlike the RAE, just record usage. They do not prescribe usage. If you understood what the person meant then to me they weren't using the word improperly. :)
English Dictionaries, unlike the RAE, just record usage. They do not prescribe usage. If you understood what the person meant then to me they weren't using the word improperly. :)

But seriously, speaking as someone who is a "first generation", it's important to understand a word and how to use it properly. Some people can be @#$! to immigrants when they don't know how to use/pronounce a word properly. It's also important when you try to read great or not so great Spanish literature. Besides, I hate looking like an idiot because I made a stupid mistake.

Back to the topic for this thread - I was hoping to raise some form of consensus concerning changes to the definitions. Would it be possible for curators who make changes to leave notes discussing the reason/source for the change if they are unprompted by a Memrise user? That way, if there is a change, we, the users, understand the rationale for the change and if not, it creates an open line of communication/discussion.

@jenniferhunter - at the moment we do ask all moderators to leave comments when making changes, and I *think* that most people do. My guess is that the cause of the changes that are not commented on is the merging process. This is not ideal. It is a fiddly and time consuming process and there are literally tens of thousands of merges to be done; commenting on each one is just not possible. It *should* be done so that the most used definition (in terms of the main lists which have had most editing etc done to them) are the ones that are kept as the main definition. All of the other definitions will be kept as alternatives, so they will still be marked as correct.
However there will still be errors in merging when the main definition will be changed. I'm really sorry about this, but the bright side is that will be a one-off merging event that is going on now, and it won't have to be done again, and that there will also be a consolidation of lots of audio content, mems etc that has been added to duplicate items and will now all appear on the same items in the database.

@Ben - I'm just surprised at some of the changes - example "el vaso", where the definition was changed to "vase" which was wrong. Or "pardo" which was originally "brown", but was changed to "dun". In this case - wouldn't the more recognizable answer "brown" or "greyish brown" be a better choice as a main definition as opposed to "dun"? I'm assuming that curators/moderators can select the main definition in the merging process. If so, why choose a esoteric word over a commonly recognized word?

So sometimes things can jump around just at the wrong moment. When you are doing lots and lots of these you sometimes get caught out and click on the wrong one. So these might be genuine fat-finger errors. APologies for that, but hopefully they will be very limited.

It appears that it is still possible for people to add duplicates. Can this be blocked in software? It makes moderating tedious if new duplicates are added as fast as they are manually removed.

You are correct to add duplicates for entries with different meanings. The example I gave is where there are simply two identical entries (they both have the same Spanish as each other and the same English).

@Nick, it is still*possible* - it needs to be so that correct duplicates can be added. But it should be very much harder to do it accidentally. The next link in the chain will be in the new wiki infrastructure when you will be able to directly notify the creator of the duplicate to say that they have created a duplicate and suggesting how not to do so in future - that way we should be able to ensure that the only duplicates that are ever created are those that are intentionally created. Does that sound workable?

Often when I type the Spanish word in the existing one doesn't pop up, so I don't know it exists.
Also often I type in the word, and the existing one which does pop up is slightly wrong or it's not clear enough, as a curator now I can go and fix it, but for people who can't do this I think the first reaction is to add a new one with the definition that they prefer.

I disagree, especially since it's much much more common to see and to need to use "primer" than primero and this word is in beginners courses and therefore should take frequency into consideration.
I have, however, added _primera and _primero into the alternative Spanish section.

I think the usage (when to use primer vs primero) might be better as a "extra info" mem. That way, you could elaborate on when one should use primer as opposed to primero.

Don't worry I completely understand, I've posted on a few websites that have this problem, I didn't mean to complain.
It would be cool if we got a few colour options as well (colours that went nicely together like the ones from the memrise logo)
I found when I was learning Czech using a separate colour for each case (declension) and then learning prepositions and verbs on flashcards in that colour worked fantastically. I think this would be good for Russian, Latin, German, and other languages that have complicated declensions, but I don't know how doable it would be and maybe the colours wouldn't stick in everybody minds the way they stuck in mine.
I used white for nominative, yellow for accusative, blue for locative, red for instrumental, orange for dative, green for genitive and I didn't make a colour for vocative because it's too easy.

You can search the internet for things available under a CC licence here. Flickr is the best option to select because it's very easy to log in there (using your facebook twitter or google account) and tell the person who's picture you've used that you've used it and thank them.

I just observed that some things in the database are changing not according to my understanding of the guidelines, so I think it would be good to discuss them:
I understood (and think it's a good way) that translations should always be one meaning to one meaning, for example: reunirto meet. alternative meanings go under alternative meanings, which will at some point be shown (example: to gather) and added as a new entry in the database reunirto gather, now having "to meet" as an alternative.
This keeps things simple and clear and will in the future allow for two way translation.
Sometimes there is also translation refinement possible, for example "reunirto meet (together)"... I think this should be simply added in the extra info memes, that's what they are there for after all and I always love if I can read some of those. And it is a much better way of explaining language nuances then adding brackets and commas to word definitions.
What do you think? It is very important that everybody commenting/curating the database agrees on the basic structure of the database, or it will never get tidy ;)

Ironically, I just sent an email to Ben about how the database completely ignores certain parts of the guidelines.
If reunir = to meet and to gather then the most important definition will be the main one and the rest will be under English alternatives. Ben has said that actually learning the alternatives is in the pipeline but for the moment only the main definition gets tested.

I just have a quick comment (and apologies) - concerning how reflexive verbs are handled. I've been noting reflexive verbs where the part of speech is rather than the special properties - I'm sorry - I think I'm remembering an older version. I would argue that reflexive verbs should be noted in the part of speech and to remove the "oneself" from the definition. While reflexive verbs are verbs in which the subject is the object being "verbed", there are reflexive verbs that have subtlety different meanings from the non-reflexive equivalent.
"Verbs used reflexively with a change in meaning: Making a verb reflexive can change its meaning in ways that aren't always predictable. Sometimes the difference in meaning is subtle. Following are some common examples; not all possible meanings of the verbs are included.
abonar, to pay money; abonarse, to subscribe (as to a periodical)
abrir, to open; abrirse, to open up (in the sense of confiding in someone)
acordar, to agree, to decide; acordarse, to remember
acusar, to accuse; acusarse, to confess
callar, to be quiet; callarse, to become quiet
cerrar, to close; cerrarse, to close oneself off emotionally
combinar, to combine; combinarse (plural forms), to take turns
dormir, to sleep; dormirse, to fall asleep"
How do you handle the passive voice (as in this case: Se cerraron las puertas. The doors were closed.) A lot of the spanish literature I've been reading uses structures like this but I would never make the connection if I was solely using memrise's definition (infinitive + oneself).

pronouns: (a subset of nouns) nouns that can stand in the place of a noun (ex = they, he, she, it)
proper nouns: (a subset of nouns) nouns that are names (John, Ben, Jennifer, Spain)
verbs: broadest category of words that indicate actions (i.e. to run)
reflexive verbs: (a subset of verbs) verbs in which the action is acted on the subject (in spanish, the reflexive verb is not necessarily translated infinitve + oneself, it may also be added as emphasis (ex: me voy - I'm GOING, or as in the example listed above with the doors (which I tend to translate into the passive voice as opposed to an active voice). There are other interpretations associated with reflexive verbs.

I would definitely not put the "vulgar" etc words with the parts of speech. They are not parts of speech. I've been using memrise for 4 months or so, exclusively to learn Spanish words. While I'm very happy with the site, there are some things which I assume could be improved by curators, though I'm unsure since I cannot find any specific information on exactly what curators are responsible for. I presume that editing falls to them, and if so, I would like to volunteer to help address some of the issues (which have to do with content) that I alluded to. In particular the somewhat random nature of articles associated with nouns is annoying. It seems best that all nouns (at least for romance languages) have the definite article and the noun designation.
To avoid droning on, I guess I will just volunteer to be a curator and start addressing such issues if that makes sense to the powers that be. If not I can always download the problem lists, fix them, and upload them as new lists, but that seems less useful for the other users of the site.

One thing on the "Conventions" page, there is no article "l'" in Spanish (although it does exist in Catalan).
I didn't know that two way testing was going to be introduced, I think it's a good idea to make sure it's "opt in" because sometimes things like phrases are translated literally because they're easier to understand and remember that way, but at the same time it would be wrong for a learner of English to learn to say the phrase that way.

yes, for phrases two way testing will need to be done differently. We are making specific sentence testing machinery, because it will need to work cleverly to avoid that problem.

The FAQ mentions that the site doesn't support grammar at the moment; Memrise is totally focused on growing your vocabulary. If you're really interested, I'd recommend the grammar section at studyspanish.com. They have a lot of quizzes and breakdowns; I usually print them off for the students I see that need extra practice or a different view on how certain aspects of grammar work.

I have started making a sentence wordset, trying to upload ten sentences at a time. My theory was to also include the sentence with just one word missing that you have fill in like so
mi (husband) es abogado - esposo
my query is whether it would be helpful if all the variants of the sentence were included. in this case there are four words so the whole sentence plus each sentence with one word missing, making it a total of five. would this be useful and if so should i also include all the words individually?

Yes, this is a great idea - in fact we are actually just building up a tool for testing fill-in-the-blank on sample sentences. So it might be worth just sticking to the straight sentences for now, and then when the tool is ready you can add those into it. The fill-in-the-blank will need sample sentences to be associated with individual words. We are building a tool to input these sentences which should make this very straight forward. Might you be able to help us do some more beta testing on it, maybe next week sometime?

Hey everyone! After reading through the conventions, I've been trying to put together a thorough spreadsheet targeted toward the chapters of the textbook used by the classes I tutor.
TL;DR -- I noticed that prepositions aren't included under the Parts of Speech section, and I wanted to make sure that I don't do this wrong. Would I be allowed to include it for, say, 'desde'? Or is there something else that works better?

I created a course 'Speed Spanish" incorporating multiple lessons form a course. I realized that in the end the course would be just too big. I'm now entering data in segments to correspond with the 12 lesson but I'd like to save on data entry by copying my original, then editing it multiple times to correspond with lesson 1, lesson 2, lesson 3 etc. rather than having to re-do all the entries again. Any advice??? Gracias!

I want to share a tip that was given to me by my Mexican friend. I noticed words such as cuando and cuándo, same for cuanto, porque, etc. So I asked here what the difference is.
cuándo with accent is used in questions.
cuando without accent is used in statements.
Examples:

I must say I find this site very hard to get around. I have looked for the FAQ for ages. There is no search function and so often to get to where I want to go have to visit another page.
For instance to get the the forum of a language you have to go to the word list page (which is usually very slow to load) and then click on the forum link. Then when I want must be a main forum I have to click community and then forums, and then the the forum type.
I could go on :( It is a beta so one cannot be too fussy and the improvements are coming thick and fast but ...

I'm very sorry that you are having this trouble with the navigation. We are trying to make things more intuitive, so you should see improvements coming along soon.
The fastest way to get to a forum for a language is to go to the topic page for that language - eg http://www.memrise.com/topi... for spanish, and then go to the forum tab.
From your home page you can go straight to the topic page of any language that you are learning by clicking on the language name in the list of gardens.
Also from that language page you can click on the FAQ tab to see the FAQs.
I may not be understanding correctly, but I *think* that if you go to a wordlist page then you can only go to the comments section for that wordlist, rather than for the topic as a whole. Does that sound right?

Hi Wiktor,
Yes it is. Canarian Spanish is much more like South American Spanish than "standard" Spanish. For example, they use 'ustedes' instead of 'vosotros' and they use the 'seseo' (basically instead of using the 'th' sound for z and c, they make an 's' sound. They also have dialect words for things such as potato and bus (papa and guagua).
Don't worry too much though as they will understand perfectly if you use 'standard' Spanish.

There is a question mode that has you type in the Spanish as a response after receiving the English definition as a question. Does anybody know a quick way to access the Spanish alphabet keys (like the enyeh curly n etc.) At the moment I have to use my faulty touchpad and the more I can avoid that horrific contraption, the better.

Well, you can get the ñ with ALT+164 on the numpad, if that helps, it's what I'm doing. I'm on a German layout here, so the ü and whatnot aren't a problem for me. ;)

It's easy on mac, it comes preloaded. Just hold down a letter and all the different accent possibilities pop up.

A few of the Spanish words have a letter in brackets after the word. This doesn't appear to indicate gender or noun, verb etc. Can anyone explain.

Sometimes more than one word means the same thing. The letter in the brackets is the first letter of the word which will be accepted. Such as "to take" = tomar

I have skipped a few words in several sets since I decided I didn't need them. Is there a way to view a list of those words and to eventually put them back in the regular learning channel?
Also it is very unclear how the skipping process works. I see a word explanation, skip the word and I'm still tested on it (at least once). Do we have to skip it both in learning and testing?

Some questions are ambiguous , and it is not easy to determine which answer of the two is required , I invariably get it wrong yet when I check the verb book or dictionary I find that I used the correct word , perhaps if it is designated "verb " or " adjective " it would be more clear.the words I have most trouble with are ,Maquillarse ,Jubilar, coquetear.

Ambiguous for the least, yes. In 2 different sets I got Pregunta & Cuestion translated directly to Question though they are not used in the same way. I got Olive translated to Aceituna & Olive, if I'm not mistaking 1 usually is the tree but which one? Etc., still many cases.

LOL dumb me. Yes it does make sense Ben, yet it's not going to help me for Spanish. Pregunta & Cuestion both are feminine singular nouns and so are Aceituna & Oliva yet they don't have the same meaning in Spanish. Yes, you are right - for these items it would be best to put a slightly longer definition (but no more than a word or two) if hat is possible, or a short explanation in parentheses - anything that is written in parentheses is not required as part of the answer. I don't know about the examples that you mention, can you think of good disambiguating clues? Thanks!Ben

I do this with my flashcards on another site and it seems to help with words with the same meaning in the same set.

How do we know which Spanish word for map you want, el mapa or el plano, when only asked to type Spanish for map? Sometimes el mapa is right but at other times it's wrong and should be el plano.Don't get this. I know that el plano is used in Spain for street maps and town plans and el mapa for route maps but this is not made clear.

BUT if I don't type in the right one (and there's no clue to which one is expected) then it's marked wrong.
Can someone please fix this to make the system accept either as correct, as has been done on some other words (for example, "unless," which has at least 3 variations I know of that are accepted as correct)? If need be I can work around this by deleting the wiki words and creating new words for both on my own list that will indicate what the answer is not. But I think it would be preferable to fix it for all users, right?

BUT if I don't type in the right one (and there's no clue to which one is expected) then it's marked wrong.
Can someone please fix this to make the system accept either as correct, as has been done on some other words (for example, "unless," which has at least 3 variations I know of that are accepted as correct)? If need be I can work around this by deleting the wiki words and creating new words for both on my own list that will indicate what the answer is not. But I think it would be preferable to fix it for all users, right?

I really like the fact that when I get the word partially right, I get to write it correctly before I go on to the next word. But, if I get the word wrong, I don't get the chance to write it. Wouldn't it make sense to let me write the word that I got wrong correctly, too? I think that would really help me to learn those words that I get completely wrong a lot faster.

Can we write a word if we get it completely wrong before we go on to the next word? We get to rewrite a word if we get it partially right, but if we get it wrong, there is no chance to write the word at all. Why not? There is still that space at the bottom of the word where we can write it. . I think this would really help me remember the word.

You do get to practice writing it. I think I see what your saying. But if you say in the same area. Such as "grow these". Keep doing a small set at a time. So you can get to practice writing the words and practicing them in small sections. I hope this helps.

I see this and it is an excellent idea; the trouble is working out how to make it available when you want it, but not intrusive when you don't. this is a tricky balance to get right. We are working on adding in more user-level settings, and perhaps this could be something that we could allow individuals to configure.Best wishesBen

Ben, on the same matter. I really would like to see what I misspelled when I am taken to the proper spelling page. In other words, carry over my misspelled word to that page so that I can see the difference. Several of us requested that in another thread.

I don't understand why (f)(pl) or (m)(sing), etc. have been used instead of the articles. Isn't much simpler to type las noches vs (f)(pl) noches?

Why can't I delete my own memes? I have been trying to make a course without using English, instead using definitions that require higher level thinking. In the process, I had a meme that gave the answer away. I want to delete in now. I should be able to. This is frustrating.

It is fairly obvious that learning 1,000 words in Spanish will only get you so far. What stage should one move to next?
Aside from using memrise to keep these words fresh my plan is to make my way through an audio course and grammar book and whenever I find a word or phrase particularly troublesome i'm going to add it to memrise and keep at it like the 1,000 most used words. The mems and constant use of the site make me feel like these problems will go away quicker than any other method.
In addition I am going to practice speaking with a few Spanish friends but wondered if anyone had used memrise and then undertook further study and if so, how has it helped, what did you do, and what would you recommend.

I feel the same way, though I haven't gotten through the list yet. But I was hoping to see a Spanish level that had phrases instead of just words. I am familiar with many of the words in the Spanish word list. My weakness is putting the words together to form sentences. It would be great to have a Spanish list that consisted of phrases.As far as what you do to get more practice, peddiegeneral, speaking with friends is the best thing you could do.

We are actually just working at the moment on building up the Spanish content in three ways - 1. to expand the Spanish dictionary on the site to around 5,000 words of checked and moderated content (with gender, parts of speech, alternative meanings etc). 2. to create more interesting and organised wordlists covering at least first 2,000 words by frequency, and 3. to start trying out full Spanish sentences. This third part requires some cleverness in regards to how the testing is done, as it will need to be different than for single words. It would be wonderful if you could help us out by trialling the sentences test sets when we put them together. Would that be ok?

Let me throw in one tidbit to everyone on this note: I was making a list for Biblical Greek (http://www.memrise.com/set/100.... There are 134,000 word-instances in the New Testament, comprised of 5393 unique words, but 25% of them are only 3 words (the, and, he.) If you learned 25 words, you would know 50% of the words in the Bible; and with with 200 words, 75%. It's the same in any other language: depending on which study you read, people have an active vocabulary of a few thousand words, and a passive vocabulary of another 20,000. That still means the "top 1000 words" is almost everything the average person will say in a day! All that being said, if someone wants to create a phrase list, just find one in spreadsheet form on google (https://www.google.com/search?..., clean it up a bit (so there aren't any definitions that are impossible to remember or type), and upload it here! ;)

Cultivating a group of Spanish speaking friends is an excellent way to increase in your skills, especially if you otherwise don't speak it during the day or week. I find quite a few differences in the way the language is used in my locale compared to Memrise definitions or even the dictionary. That's one of the reasons I like having multiple definitions on my list as opposed to one-word definitions. With friends if they say something I really want to learn & I don't have paper to write it down, I will ask them to text it to me.You can create your own list like I did. I called mine Karen's Basics and it is in no particular order because it consists of words, idioms, phrases & even sentences I've encountered (hopefully, am learning) through actual usage in either reading or conversation. (I tried Spanish TV too, but felt it was a waste time for me.) My word list keeps growing as I hear or read new words.It's not hard to do a list, it just takes time. I have also started two separate lists to help me learn verbs (haven't had time to get very far - only ser & estar present tense) using sentences. My husband is using my lists also, although he has even less free time than I do and hasn't gotten very far. Not having enough time to work on my Spanish is my main problem.The one huge negative to be aware of when making a list, is one I discovered the hard way - I've added a lot of words that weren't originally in the Spanish wiki. Memrise has since taken over some of "my" words and I can no longer edit them - which has been extremely frustrating and has meant that I have had to re-do a lot of my original work. If I wanted to add or revise a definition, frequently I could no longer edit. But it's apparently the price you have to pay to have your own list, and it's still worth that frustration to me to have my very own list.

Hi -- I've been working my way through the 5,000 Spanish words list. I have encountered numerous identical words in that list. What I mean is words that have different Spanish meanings but identical English clues. When I get the English clue, I don't know which Spanish word Memrise is looking for. I've posted a few comments about this glitch on the general feedback page, but I just discovered this forum. Is this problem being addressed as part of the improvements you described above? Should I keep trying to notify you or somebody else each time I find another one of these ambiguous clues? Thanks!

Thanks for this - the best thing to do is to leave a comment on the word itself. You can do this by clicking "edit" from the menu at the top of the page during a learning session, or by clicking on a plant in the garden. Then a topic curator will be able to take a look at it. The best thing would be if you do happen to know of any shade to the definition that might help to distinguish the different words. That will make the editing process faster; but if you are just learning, then you might not be able to do this of course! In that case just a comment pointing it out should be enough.Thanks and best wishesBen

It would be great to have your help as a curator - I have set you up as one!I have been thinking over whether we want to start adding clues like this into the tests. The problem is that once we start adding in clues in order to disambiguate words, it is hard to know where to draw the line; also having clues can force you to rely on the clue - like you might actually just start to recognise which words have clues associated with them... it sets up all sorts of opportunity for creating false cues to remember the words. I have discovered, however, that the alternative you suggest (accepting either answer as correct) makes it very hard for me to learn both words. Unconsciously, once I figured out that Memrise was accepting either answer as correct, I started to default to entering the first word that I already knew, instead of the second word that was harder to remember. (It's like Memrise is giving you permission to cheat on the test!) I like the ideas you suggest for new types of tests and I look forward to exploring those as you roll them out. Cheers!

OK. I have my first question about curating. I'm trying to be very sparing with the clues, using them only when there are identical matches for words with no grammatical distinction. In the few cases where I am adding a letter to distinguish between two identical words, I am realizing that this creates a new problem. When someone using Memrise is asked to type in the English word, won't they now be getting it wrong if they fail to type in the additional letter in parentheses? Is there any way for me to add that parenthetical letter without making it part of the required answer? (Until I hear back from you, I'll stop adding letters. I don't want to make a mess.) Thanks!

http://www.memrise.com/set/... is the wordset and if anyone wants to give it a go and see if it is any good i would be very appreciative. I think if we could get a raft of people adding wordsets like this it would make learning something else in Spanish much easier and fun! Well hopefully anyway.

When asking the Spanish for date there are actually three answers...Fecha (as in todays date), Cita, (as in date with friend) and Dátil,(as in fruit). Also cita can be used for "appointment"

What I think would make it even better, and actually much more helpful in terms of actually understanding the audio, is if you put up audio files of the phrases, so that I got repetition of the sound of the phrases in my ear while I was learning them. Thanks for this!

I made a word set for a music video here http://www.memrise.com/set/100... and if you want to try that and give me some feedback that would be great. I also thought that adding as much detail to the wordset as possible. such as transmitir (the verb to transmit) and transmiten (conjugated version of the verb) etc to give a bit more depth. as for the other suggestions about putting the videos on the wordset, am i just being stupid or how do i go about doing this?

A flat and an apartment are the same thing. As are, piso, apartamento, and DEpartamento?

In Spanish idioms, there are a number of expressions where the sound recording (which is usually excellent) does not match the item that's just been shown. Is this something a curator could fix? I'll make a list as I find theM;
1) que lio; 2) lengua de tierra; 3) por lo tanto

Thanks for spotting these - I have edited the ones that you mentioned above - except for "lengua de tierra" which sounded correct to me - could you just re-confirm that?"Pero, por supuesto" is an odd one because the url makes it look like the word used to be "no faltaba mass" I am going to look in to why it was changed. Another thing that would be very useful to me in learning Spanish and Portuguese would be some way of discounting articles (el/la/una/uma or /o/a/um/uma) in any answer. That way one would not be marked wrong for 'o jardim' when the expression given is 'jardim'. Is this something for which a global fix is possible?

Hmm, could you send me a link to those items - they are not in the Spanish database which means that someone has switched them to another language which is why they are turning up the wrong way around. But it is hard to track them down without a link. Thanks!

This is an excellent suggestion. We have just added in a feature on your profile so that you can say what languages you speak and are learning. This will pave the way to better search features and better ways to link up with other users down the line. This is going to take a little while to get done, but the ground work is being laid right now.

I'm not sure what can be done at this point, but it would be nice to have all the Spanish nouns include El, La, Los, or Las to indicate gender. I find myself missing words because I either include El, La, Los, or Las when the answer does not, or I exclude them when the answer includes them. I end up repeating words that I know. It gets to the point where I'm having to remember if the particular word includes El, La, Los, or Las.

Yes, the full dictionary is uploaded, so if you want to create a wordlist now you can do so by just uploading a list of Spanish words and it will pick the checked items out from the database. We are in the process of merging the items in wordlists with the checked items so that all the wordlists that have already been made are also fixed up. This will be finished soon; it is taking a bit longer than hoped for because we are re-building the infrastructure at the same time to make sure that we don't need to do this again in the future. Hi, sorry to be dumb - in what sense is the fix not working, and how are these items messed up? If the items don't have a definite article, then you just need to leave a comment on the word and it will get fixed and merged. Does that help? Sorry if I am being slow here!ThanksBen

I have had this problem too, some words are still not merged in this way i.e. when you don´t include the article, it marks it incorrect. I will start putting notes on the ones that I find that are like this.... what category of mem should I write the note in? Extra Info? Thanks.

It would be great if there was a way of making a comment, or a question about the language to native speakers\other people who might know an answer... actually while learning... I have put some of these type of comments under 'Extra Info' but I don´t know whether anyone ever looks at them, and I wouldn´t know if an answer had been posted because there´s no way of being notified... worth some thought? Just an idea... hope it makes sense!

I list some that I think would be very good, and I encourage you to think about ways to make this list more complete;
1. Better statistics - I would like a chart of how many words I learn in a day, as starters.
2. Better navigation - God traversing through this site is just aweful. I want a button to start learning immediately, i don't have time to go through all the buttons!
3. more meaningful buttons and features; I need to know how many words I learned today to reach my capacity (ie 50 new words a day). also, I need to access the courses I'm learning more easily, right now I'm searching for that page!

I have edited most of these, but for the ones where you say "could this be disambiguated," I am not sure exactly what you would like to be done: could you possibly make a specific suggestion for the change to make, and then I can make the edit and leave a note so that other people can see if they agree or disagree. The options would be: a) we could add the other item as an "alternative spanish" to this item. That would mean that when you are presented with the english and asked to translate you could answer with either and be marked correct. b) do the two items have subtly different meanings? if so then they could be defined differently, and added as each other's "confusables" and then you could add a "confusable mem" pointing out where the difference lies and how to remember them apart.I'm not sure I totally understand what you mean by "advance of synonyms" - do you mean that when they create a list we should warn them of words that have the same meanings? This is a good idea, but it is hard to see how best to implement it: it is hard to write a program that could reliably tell when two phrases have a very similar meaning. It is also difficult to see when they should be given the warning and what they should do about it. No. The reason these end with jarse is because they are reflexive verbs (thus the adding of -se at the end of the infinitive) and they are verbs pertaining to the 1st conjugation (ending in -ar).
The other conjugations are 2nd (verbs ending in -er) and 3rd (verbs ending in -ir). Whether they are reflexive or not doesn't depend on the conjugation type.
