I know it is a wiki type site and as a user I can make a course (I am here to learn not teach though) but it does seem odd that a course on family tells me father son mother sister firm?? but then not daughter or grandmother. Likewise introductory italian teaches me to meow but I am still waiting to say hello. Could the curators perhaps review the courses from a practical perspective.
thanks and I do love it really

Just wondering if it's only Aurora's 1005 words which have speech as well? I find myself often relying how the word sounded spoken to memorise it. Really great courses though!

I agree it's a great help. With other courses I type the word into Google translate so that I can hear its pronunciation.

Memrise is a wiki, so we rely on users to add content. So if you know any native Italian speakers who would be happy to give a few minutes of their time to reading down a list of words, then we can get much more audio up there! take a look at the instructions for adding audio here - http://www.memrise.com/faq/... and let me know if you have any questions,
Thanks!

Is it possible for users to add new words or to suggest words to be added?

According to my dictionary and "501 Italian Verbs" accorgersi means to notice or to become aware of and not to realise.

Thank you very much for this comment - if you leave the comment on the page for the word itself (you get there by clicking on the word in a wordlist, or by clicking "edit" when you see a word in a learning session) then the topic curators can see the comment and make the edit.Memrise is a wiki and so depends on the feedback of people like you to keep getting better and better, so thank you very much!Best wishesBen

I remember an interview on TV with Franco Zefirelli, some years ago. The presenter was interrupted when he began a question with the words, "speaking as an Italian...."
Zefirelli broke in and said, "speaking as a Florentine..........."
Now we have the Northern League(god help us!). We have spent many, many months in Italy over the past 40 years and the regionalism is still the same. Sometimes it is highly amusing, sometimes anything but. Thoughts!

The regionalism makes it so much more interesting. A bit like Spain. The danger is only when regionalism develops into xenophobia. I speak as someone from the north of England who lives in the south. Vive la difference.

In Italy you always tend to specify what part you are from. I think it's just a habit. Nobodys trying to discriminate anyone else.

I am trying to read Camilleri and watch Montalbano on RAI, any chance of a Sicilian section?

I seem to have lost my gardens. Can I get them back or do I have to start all over again? I'd appreciate any tips. Thanks.

If you are on a course does it still show how many users are learning with it? Or is that one of the changes that's been made to the site?

This word will not water... I have never missed it... 100 percent accuracy it says its healthy as all of my words in the list are, but if I highlight it it says it's parched and its basically nonexistent... I cannot figure out how to get rid of the word because it is absolutely annoying me, I've watered it dozens of times... please help me get rid of it or fix the word : (

Some of the words under the introductory session seem very specific! I am not sure when I am going to use some of them, such as private beach, lunch on the 15th of August ... . Can some of the more common from the other sessions be added and some of these more unusual ones go under a separate heading?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I had the same feeling about some of those words. Thanks to the forum, I learned that you can ignore words (there's a button for this on the top when a word is on display) and then they do not show up again - so one does not need to learn them and can concentrate on the ones which seem more useful.

Very useful information, but have you found a course that contains a practical, "conversational" vocabulary in a well-laid out and progressive structure? Such as "Hello," "Goodbye," "How are you," "What is your name," "My name is," etc... Otherwise I guess we'll have to use the wiktionary to build such a course.

That would be good to find. So far, I still like learning these random words especially as I now know how to delete those which I'll never use. I'm more interested in putting words into sentences ... .

I find it hard to learn under basic Italian as there is no sound and no guidance so I don't understand the use.
Anyone got any tips?

Have you even found a good italian course? I've looked through the word lists of all of the "beginner" courses and they're all full of obscure words that I find hard to believe anybody would use in a casual conversation. A good example of a "beginner" course with useful words is the "Conversational Lithuanian" course which starts with "Hello," "Goodbye," "Good night," "Good Morning," "What is your name?" "How are you?" etc... not this "dog," "canary," and "disobedient" crap...

It would be good if we could omit words we already know from our individual programmes, like in my course it gets boring going over words you just couldn't forget. : )

There's an ignore this word button that you can click on the menu on the top as it's quizzing you on the specific word!

Thank you very much for the information on the "ignore this word button" - this is good, also for words, which I do not see any need in learning (e.g. when one never goes to the beach, one doesn't need to know certain words)!

In the garden tab, it would be useful if the time until next wilting plant is shown.

Yeah. I understand what you mean. That way, you could study the word more. Hmm. Never thought about that. You're smart.

i agree completely. I'm just learning this, and found this site not long ago, but I'm actually learning a language that has fascinated me for a long time. Anything I can learn here will be pretty awesome.
