Some mems have clever use of italics. Yet I see no way to add them myself. Do people write their mems first in a word processor & then copy & paste? Am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing something, welcome to the club. Luckily I learned just by last week how to format text in Memrise text fields. The trick is to put text in BRACKETS to render it italics and in CURLY BRACKETS to bold it.
Does not work with picture mems though, guess they use a different system to display the text there.
