Need VPN to use Memrise in China?
I am having to use a VPN to use Memrise in Shanghai China - I can get on the site without one, but get stuck on the loading screen and can't practice (can't get on forums without VPN either) :-/

Some people in China mentioned using the "strongarm" proxy based in Hong Kong. Though, they changed proxy providers to someone else later. I am not sure if it was to reduce the cost of the service, or if there was a change in the quality of the proxy service. http://www.proxynova.com/proxy-server-list/country-cn/
Posted by stoney 7/26/12 (10 months ago)Have had very good experience with Strongarm - I use it now. Just make sure you get the right service for the part of Asia you are in. Their customer service is very good and starts up once you go to their website. They can guide you and ensure your setup is correct.

Posted by marquis 8/26/12 (9 months ago)generally the cause is API calls to facebook and twitter. My solution is this:
1) Install "Ad-Block Plus" extension 2) Subscribe to "Anti-social" block list or "Fanboy's Annoyances"
That list is specifically maintained to block those annoying share/post links to other social media sites, but has the added benefit of making pages NOT take forever to load in China b/c the sites are GFW'd.
