Curators, please read

Hello all!

As you might know, I'm very limited at the moment in my functions as curator due to technical issues. This is why I cannot make corrections myself. I noticed that a lot of corrections/clarifications/clean-ups are being made at the moment and I'm very very happy about that! Could we just please make sure we don't "correct" words that we're actually right in the beginning but are now wrong or unclear? I have seen a couple of those recently, one example being "levar", which does NOT mean "to get". Another one is "a folha", which is of course a sheet, but it also means leaf, which it used to say, but not anymore. Thanks for reading this and especially for all the work you are doing while I'm being a bit useless :-D Olívia

  • Hi Olivia, I am really sorry that the patrol is still not working properly - if you leave a comment on any items that you edit I will make sure that they go live ASAP.

    Best wishes

    Ben

  • The changes were probably mine. I am more than half way through reviewing all the words and have removed most of the duplications. I am sure there are things I have missed and mistakes made. Please point them out.

The conventions say that each portuguese word should have only one meaning and if there are more than one there should be a separate entry for each word. I am not convinced that it is the best way but it is the memrise way.

I cannot recall folha/sheet/leaf but would guess that the translation read sheet, leaf. I had to delete on of the meanings. Possibly there were a number of entries for that word which were merged. Also it would have to be made clear that it did not relate to bed sheets. I will add a new entry for folha/leaf.

You are right about levar. I don't know if this was one of my edits or not, I hope not :) I try to avoid using the word get in any translations as it has so many meanings in english as it can just confuse things.. I will change it "to take, carry".

Please carry on fixing/reporting, it is the only way to get a reliable list. What may make perfect sense to my mind may make no sense at all to everyone else. I am sure plenty of my revised translations are doubtful or incomplete; they will stay like that until someone either corrects it or reports it.

  • Just to follow up on folha: there are three entries for this word If you look in the dictionary you will see translations as sheet, leaf and sheet/leaf. http://www.memrise.com/topic/portuguese-brazil/search/

In due course I will be given them as duplicates and will make sure that there are two entries one for sheet and one for leaf. I guess it depends on which course you are doing as to which version you will see in the mean time.

  • I just wanted to say Hi! I am new as a curater here, and I wil try to don't mess the things! If I do anything wrong, please let me know. I am trying to add the sound/pronunciation to some words, and making different gramar levels and vocabulary courses... I have tehm set alreay, put didn't put on air before I have all pronunciations done.

I do not find in Portuguese (Brazil) "Featured" courses as I find in other languages. It would be helpful for lernners to have a set of about 7 suggested courses for them, between all community courses.

    Regards!

  • Welcome. Your mistakes will be anonymous and nobody knows which curator did any changes :)

We need native speakers to help, especially with recordings. My wife has recorded about 1000 words and is ready to do more but is waiting for a response from Ben on how to obtain a list of all words that do not have recordings.

The course content is yours (please do not duplicate words already in the wiki). You should make your course description as clear as possible and indicate the level of student it is aimed at and what sorts of specialised words to expect. After that it is up to the learners to choose the course they think best fits their needs.

I have not looked at courses for other languages but if there are good ideas to be copied I, for one, am very interested.

  • Hi! so... I am from Rio de Janeiro, and I will try my best to don't put that much accent on recordings. I have done 100 words... a little, but is a help, and I will put them today.

For the gramar courses, as in others I have seen, I am adding characters, to don't over write old ones, and make it as a new entry... not sure if it will give you guys any trouble.

About Featured Courses, I have no clue of how can it be done (Ben must knows), but it shows the top courses (those more complete and cool ones), what is great if your are not patient enough to look in all created courses. And created courses shows on top the one with more words, maybe a course with 50 words is better and more easy to begin than one with 50000... that is why is intresting to have featured courses. As in: http://www.memrise.com/topi... http://www.memrise.com/topi...

    regards!

  • @luiza.queroga

The German courses look very interesting, I hope you can compile some lists that compare well. htere seems to be plety of demand for good courses.

As much as you can please try to comply with the conventions here http://www.memrise.com/topic/brazilian-portuguese/conventions/

It does make the life of curators and moderators much easier. It will also make your life easier if your entries are not 'corrected'by moderators.

Yes, it would certainly be a great idea to have a featured beginners word-list of 50 or 100 easy and useful words with audio.

Thanks for recording some audio - it really does help

  • If there are duplications, how should they best be addressed?

Also, and this isn't just for the Portuguese lessons, is there any way when a change is made to a word like the meaning or definition changed to be more accurate, these words could go back to the greenhouse? It's frustrating to "take a break" and come back to a course, type an answer, only to find it's wrong because of a correction.

  • @Keyido

Basically there is nothing that can be done. I spent a lot of time merging duplicates but people upload new lists all the time and rarely seem use existing words. For the last month or so the merge function has not been working but I hope that it will in the new Memrise. Curators cannot merge words.

It is not logical to have one word with half a dozen different but similar translations. Nor is it logical to leave a word wrongly spelled or translated. Corrections have to be made and it will cause a short term problem for students. I don't see a way around this. Maybe Memrise could delay publication of lists until they have been approved but that will cause frustration for list owners and put a lot of pressure on moderators.

  • I found a lot of duplication, some even added by me without intention... by adding words to courses, I may had changed some information (wrong accent or spelling) and it added as new word. I can not merge them, can I? How to manage them, when I find some? Regards!

    Posted by luiza.queroga 10/1/12 (1 year ago)
  • There are hundreds of duplicates, some words have five different translations and the Portuguese words are not always spelled the same. I had already merged hundreds of words but the merge feature stopped working about a month ago. I suspect it was to stabilize the database during the period that two versions of Memrise were running.

Curators cannot merge words. I am not sure how the new Memrise will deal with merging but it worked quite well in the past.

The tricky thing is to decide which word to accept as the definition and whether to add to that definition. I quite often include two or three definitions to give a hint to students that the word has changed. The idea is to later reduce the definition length.

As soon as the new Memrise allows it I will start merging.
