Filter out component characters and/or radicals
I think that the Chinese entries can be divided into 4 categories, though I'm not sure if this is how the database tags have been set up. There are radicals, characters that aren't commonly used on their own (component characters), single characters that can function as components or on their own and compound words made of 2 or more components.
I like studying radicals, because they make it easier to learn characters, but I'm not very interested in learning the "meaning" of component only characters because they confuse me as to whether I should use them in practice (e.g. to protect = 保 or 保护). I prefer to learn the implied meaning of component characters by seeing them in the context of different words (保险,保护,保留). In fact, I still don't know if or when I can use 保 on its own.
With every course, it would be really helpful to have some filters so that we can choose to include or exclude entries according to the 4 categories/tags.

This is a really good suggestion; it is not currently how the database is set up, but I can certainly see the value. I will have a think about how we could implement this, or something like it.
Best wishes
