Remove spinning scores

Please remove the spinning numbers in the score screen. It's capturing the key and imposing a 4-5 seconds wait, very annoying for power users.

  • I just thought this today, annoying waiting to see the percentage.

  • Yes, please remove them. I hate to wait everytime for no reason.

  • I kind of liked it, as it's kind of like a reward scheme. Just waiting in anticipation to see what you have got and then wanting to improve more.

However I agree that in the long run it may get frustrating :(

  • I think this must be a browser issue for some users. I'm using Google Chrome and it is only taking 2 or 3 seconds to spin through both the score and percentage.

  • It's the same with me alanh, doesn't take long at all. I think the main point was that it just takes more time than just apearing lol.

However I think you can just hit 'enter' when it apears and it skips it entirely.

  • It seems to take so long, I agree with removing it, there's no point.

  • I kind of like the spinning scores - it works okay on chrome and on my android tablet. It is the blackberry browser where the spinning scores act strangely, I cannot get my score without moving the trackpad back and forth (when I stop moving the trackpad the score gets suspended - otherwise I wait about four seconds). Also, the last score doesn't seem to get added to the overall tally (I.e. If you learn 5 new words at 100% you should score 225, and this gets added to the overall tally, but the scrolling scores stop at 200). I keep spreadsheets on the amount of words I learn/harvest/revise a day per language/wordlist, so I try to keep an eye out for the end tally and don't want to skip it.

  • I don't care for it because it slows the total watering session - I record my scores on a spreadsheet. When I have to water several courses, it get's tedious waiting for the percentage correct to "roll up" just so I can make a new entry on my spreadsheet.

  • @jenniferhunter, If it's taking that long, I can well understand your frustration and I hope that the team can find a fix for you and others experiencing a similar delay. This morning, I watered some 60 plants in one of my courses and the score and percentage only took a couple of seconds to 'roll up' afterwards. Other, smaller sessions throughout the day have been equally speedy. Sorry, I'm not gloating - just pointing out that it's not the same for all users.

  • I've given the spinning scores a couple of days. I still don't like them.

By the time the figures have loaded (yes I know it's not long but this is the super-fast digital age!) I'm less interested in my results and more bothered about the well done/try harder/your doing great (grind teeth) comments.

I'd rather just have the summary appear at the end. I'd also like the option to have the old score, percentage correct and words seen box during the tests back too.

  • I can see why it's added. It's style, which is an important part of us enjoying the sight, being excited, motivated to learn, etc.

I hope there's a way to keep touches like this without it costing anyone anything. e.g. perhaps if you hit a key or move the mouse more than a little bit, the count up goes away and you see the finals instantly. Also, perhaps make the count up faster and accelerating so if it's a big number or small it always finishes at the same interval.

I think we can keep it to give the site a video game feel, but make sure it provides (almost) zero footprint for power users.

  • Or just give an option to disable it. I don't like it either.

  • I've just done several one-plant watering sessions in succession. It really does seem unintelligent when the counter spins its way from 0 to 100% - somtimes taking longer to do this than it took to type the single two-letter answer that it is giving me the metrics on.

  • Ye it is understandable when your only wanting to plant 1 word and it comes up. But overall takeing an extra 2-5 seconds out of a 50 word revision really isn't to bad. Plus you can skip it by just hitting 'enter' twice when inputing the last word. It may be just me and my browser or something but I don't think it's really that much of a problem.

  • What a tolerant person you are!

Posted by revans 7/11/12 (11 months ago)
  • __ Thank you, I think lol. There is always the difference of being tolerant and lenient ;). Memrise is just trying to improve there site and any feed back given I hope will be taken and used in their development :) -If most of the community feels that it is not needed then by all means revert back to the original.

Posted by Forxnat 7/11/12 (11 months ago)
  • Damn, you spotted the irony.

Yes, I have no doubt memrise are trying to improve, in all kinds of ways. And they do pay attention to feedback (otherwise I wouldn't bother to feed back).

But some of the 'improvements' are one step dubiously foward and two back. IMHO!

  • Giving the option to disable this seems to be the best idea.

  • @alanh and others who like the rolling up Some of us don't need the cutesy tricks. I have a good connection - but I come from the city - it's a different mindset - I loathe waiting for something that provides no value. Even a couple of seconds is annoying when I need to record it in my spreadsheet. Remember, not everyone is home when they access memrise. Total time counts, especially when it's limited. I'll be honest - I don't get why the rolling up numbers would appeal. (I'm going to accept that other people appreciate it, but it does baffle me. But different strokes for different folks. If the majority of people like it, than memrise should keep it.) It's not the type of thing that appeals to me and I despise the manipulative feel of this "feature". I'm not a child and the only thing I care about is the ultimate score. If it rolls up to 25%, I'm not going to be more happy or more motivated than if I had just seen the final score of 25% without the rollup.
Sorry, I come off a bit offensive to people who like the rolling up. But it's annoying me more than the removing of the in-watering scores.

  • Perhaps both the don't-want-to-wait and the excited-to-see-the-score-climb sides of this argument could be accommodated if all three items counted up simultaneously?

I don't mind seeing the percentage rise, but the number of words is usally a given, depending on whether it is a plant seeds (5) or a watering (50) session. The total score is fairly predictable once the percentage correct is known.

I have a decently fast connection, but the process has often conked out before I see the final percentage/points. I usually have an idea of whether it is more like 60% or 90% or whatever so it doesn't matter all that much to me, but I don't like to see the count freeze on 15% when I know I got most of them right!

    Posted by 001001001 7/11/12 (11 months ago)
  • Im with you on that one. I care more about what percent I got and if it was an improvement on last time. This way I can measure my achievments. Whereas the number of words is as you said usually a given.

Posted by Forxnat 7/11/12 (11 months ago)
  • I don't recall ever saying that I was a fan of the rolling-up feature, although I did say under a different topic that the change from the single "Well Done!" end-of-watering message was an improvement. That said, I don't dislike the rolling-up counter - simply because it hasn't caused me any problems (so far) or the kind of very real frustrations being experienced by @jenniferhunter and others. Unless and until the time delays that seem to be the root cause of those frustrations can be fixed on all platforms and browsers, maybe it would be best to revert to the previous arrangement.

  • Please remove this feature. It's really annoying.

  • Yes, please let us disable unwanted animations.

Posted by appux 7/12/12 (11 months ago)
  • I also dislike the rolling result, and would prefer to have the option to just cut straight to the chase so I can move on to my next watering session. I like the feedback on how well I did during the session, so I don't want to get rid fo tthat screen entirely, just pop the metrics up and skip the annimation, please.

    Posted by Jill348 7/12/12 (11 months ago)
  • today this animation is taking much more than 30 seconds. I had time to find my phone, unlock it, open the clock app, select timer, reset it, start it, and it STILL counted 30 seconds! Unless this is just an animated way of saying "please wait" because you are unable to retrieve the data any faster, please give us the option to skip the animation and just get the feedback on how the session went.

    Posted by Jill348 7/14/12 (11 months ago)
  • We've made the animation run much quicker, and more consistently across browsers/devices. If it still takes you longer than 1-2 seconds, let me know which browser+device you're using and we'll sort it out.

Posted by eliotyork 7/17/12 (11 months ago)
  • It is faster but still bad. :(

Posted by ponchoosh 7/17/12 (11 months ago)
  • I still hate having to wait until the end of the session, but if they have to stay I don't mind rolling scores as long as theyre fast.
