Pictures under new system

I can't credit pictures anymore, I don't just want to steal someone's picture and not say who it belongs to.

I tried to include a link to the source in the mem but it isn't clickable:

  • Memrise, does the text really have to be on top of the images? Couldn't it wrap instead?

  • If the link is short people can read it and hand type it (that's going to happen!) if it's long it goes off the page and it cannot be read.

Another thing, the text in the mems can't be highlighted anymore, so I can't highlight it while I'm reading it or double click on a word to see it's meaning using a browser add-on.

  • Ummm - you can move the text around. You just have to play around with the enters. see - one of the mems I created for a Mandarin word - http://www.memrise.com/item/591380/abalone-3/

  • To repeat: he link is not clickable, and no matter where I move a very long link it still will not be visible.

  • here is another example of what I mean: http://www.memrise.com/item/1887218/el-menton-prominencia-de-la-mandibula-inferior/ it is impossible to access the site where I got the picture from, the link does not fit on the image and it cannot be clicked.

  • jennifer, how in hell do you do that? Is that another situation where you have to type 5 spaces, 4 enters and 2 HTML? I love this site but really they are #1 too in being completely obscure as a far as instructions/how to's.

I couldn't edit your mem so I have no idea how it's formatted. I did edit another one: http://www.memrise.com/item/871897/asomar-to-show/?set= and it show: When I go to a SHOW, I like to dress up AS OMAR Sharif. How the user got that link to the image on the server is a complete mystery to me.

    So, how, what's the magic?

  • Also in the previous example the text was normal. In the mem I created (same for Rabbit) the text is on black background, why?

Posted by sfrenchie 6/22/12 (2 years ago)
  • Aside from the formatting nightmare so far I have found those images to be completely useless for me. If some day Memrise decides for an Option page I sure would like to see the option to NOT display those.

  • Ah! he wrote img: instead of uploading the picture. I did not see anywhere that we could do that. You still can't click on it to see who the picture belongs to though, it's completely stolen. This is probably why there were so many broken links, if you see your bandwidth jumps up because your pictures are being accessed a lot from one site and they didn't have the decency to give you credit, of course you're going to block it or take the picture down!

  • @RabbitWho - if you copy the link (just a text copy) and paste it into Notepad (the default text editing software for programmers because it doesn't add crap into code) you will see that it's not a link anymore. This is what I see - httpdibujosparacolorearpintarimagenesblogsp/ In contrast, if I copy and paste the URL for the forum, I get this: http://www.memrise.com/topic/spanish/forum/. I think, when you copy this stuff into a mem, (same for me because my link isn't active as well), it isn't set up to make it a link. If you look at the code on my mem's page (line 335), you should see my link enclosed by this (line break) when I actually need an (a url link) tag. I don't really remember what I did. I probably cut and paste the link from the image site to the mem creator tool.

  • @sfrenchie - I just did made a lot of enters, and then pasted the image. I figured that it was a simple text/image editor.

ARgghh - I don't remember how I did it. Damn my memory. (Or else they changed something between now and when I created the mem.)

I agree, they need to get people to test out the user interface. Too many times, the interface is confusing or unnecessarily complicated.

  • Ah, you are throwing in forbidden words LOL: testing, instructions, logic :0)

  • what was I thinking (smacks hand on forehead). I wish that instead of telling us that they have these big projects in the pipeline, they would describe them to us. That way, users could tell them which one's they would prefer ahead of others.
For example, trouble word testing would be something I prefer over a new mem editor. Those mandarin tones are killing me.

  • Project? Oh I got one I would vote for...stop "improving" and FIX THE BUGS!!!

  • @Memrise - make the text and images in the mem editor movable. (i.e. I can drop and drag them.) Let us be able to adjust the text font, size, and color. Give us a preview screen so that we can see what it would look like before we save the mem. Have a separate field where we have to input the src of the image (if we input an image). Have an additional field for a text quote (if the person had input an image and a quote - for example "No, I am your father's cousin's nephew's roommate" and an image of the scene from spaceballs. Same for video - make it intuitive. Say, upload movie (have a fixed window that pops up player) and a link for the video link. And, if you can't succeed, look at Apple. I might hate their guts, but they have very pretty products.

@ the rest of us - What do you guys think? Is there anything else we would like the mem editor to do?

  • I have given up trying to put in pictures and it's a real shame because they are great learning tools. If there is ever a way to start putting them in again, please let me know, and I will start to do what I hope are decent mems again. Thank you.

  • @sanlee, I am really sorry that you are not finding the image uploader works for you. Did you prefer to embed the images rather than upload them? The problem with that was the number of broken links was becoming an issue, so we really need to be able to upload the images onto the site.

We are adding in an image search in the mem editor that should help to make finding, adding and attributing images much easier.

    Best wishes

    Ben
