Scheduling Algorithm

I am wondering what scheduling algorithm memrise uses to get intervals between showing the cards. It seems similiar to Anki's one?

  • It's similar in principle, but works pretty differently in the details. I'll try and write a blog post about it sometime soon!

  • A question I raised in another thread: why does memrise's testing interval (apparently) stop at 3 months? This seems like a waste of time for some extremely basic words that I know really well. I don't want to 'ignore' words in my lists, but that seems like the only way right now to stop these kind of words taking up my time.

  • +1 to Azimuth question. Very valid point.

  • This seems to have changed recently - some of my plants are out at 4 and 5 months now. Which is very welcome.

  • same here - I've seen a couple that are 4/5 months as well. It's a very welcome change.

  • We set the 3-month ceiling a while ago to avoid runaway intervals, which was a problem we were experiencing occasionally with early versions of the algorithm.

Now that our algorithm is more stable, we thought we'd try @Azimuth and @revans' suggestion to increase the ceiling. So far so good, but it might be too early to notice any subtle consequences.

  • Great news, thanks! (and maybe if it continues to work, intervals can be extended even further for words that you never get wrong).

  • cool, I was worried about that, that's great. One fun thing with anki was that if I took a "break" for a few months, then any words I got right when I came back that were way over their interval were set to not test me for another year or two, which was kind of amusing (but not necessarily wrong)

  • Thanks! it is awesome to have higher ceiling. I use memrise both for learning new words and for reminder of older and easy ones (funny how some of them disappear if you don't see them for a few years and when you need them, you feel like an idiot) so I take a lot of courses and I was already worried I might eventually get to situation where 10000 or more words would be waiting for me every three months. A nightmare...
