  • There used to be an urban legend about such a thing. It is true that English is not the "official language" of the United States. It is used on a "de facto" basis.

  • German is no longer used as a first or even second language in enough US households for it to be an official language. As Robodl95 states, the US has no de jure official language. The closest we have is English, which is de facto - and many might also consider Spanish in that mix, making the US a de facto bilingual country. However, I believe States can make the call as to what official languages they have...so in a place like South Dakota, German could be on par with English.
