Kanji cleanup?

Hi, I've recently started use/create some Kanji courses to practice. There appears to be quite an amount of useless entries, i.e. Kanji that are not included in any course or what-so-ever. On the other hand I frequently find two 'nice' entries, but only one with audio and the other one with nice mems, which is kind of sad. Also many Kanji (particularly those from Kanjidamage) lack kun and onyomi, so I can't practice that. And some entries may profit from additional alternatives (e.g. 簡 accepts 'simplicity' but not 'simple'). Are there any plans to clean up this section? Would be nicer to just have one or two enries per kanji with all the goodies on them!

  • It'd be nice if someone would compile the ons and kuns from KD, as well as the jukugo readings, and make a more extensive course under the "Japanese" topic. Complete with the okuri, and tags where necessary.

Would take months to do all that, though.

As much as I would love to integrate KD's aesthetically pleasing learning style, some kanji are a bit more complicated, what with the 2-3 meanings and all. A simple solution would be to use (;) symbols for Japanese kanji meanings.

For the kana...I don't really know.

  • @Giton: It is a matter of moderating the words and merging all the different entries into one card. I have been slowly doing this over the past week or so.. hopefully you have noticed some improvement! It takes a long time to do though. Eventually the ultimate goal is for it to look exactly as you suggest, with all of the mems and audio together!

Feel free to edit the wiki if you ever have ideas of other alternatives to add. The new system will allow us to see your suggestions and accept them (or you can become a curator yourself.) _._

    @nisbahmumtaz: Maybe something like this...? :) http://www.memrise.com/set/10019126/words-from-kanjidamage

  • @cacoethes Woah, nice! As soon as I finished learning kanji and grammar, definitely going to give this a shot.

  • @cacoethes: I have acutally thinking about your (and ikenaiAndi's) offer to participate as a curator. Since I'm using memrise a lot recently I got fairly used to everything by now and think I can contribute my share to make it better. Since there is a lot to do in the Kanji section I would like to start out here. Did send an official application to memrise staff but still haven't got an answer.

  • @Giton, I have set you up as a curator for the Japanese Kanji topic - thank you very much for getting involved!

Please let me know if I can do anything else to help,

    Best wishes

    Ben

  • Hi Ben. I'll write this in here to not immedeiately start a new topic. I wanted to do some patrolling today and started with the suggested changes. However I always get this error:

'Unfortunately, there was a problem - try refreshing or picking something different to learn. We'll do our best to fix this as soon as we possibly can. Sorry about this.'

Does not happen with the other patrol options though. Bug?

  • Also error upon adding confusable words/parents/descendents

  • What should I do when I run into duplicates that should be merged? Add a discussion? Ignore it? Apply to become curator so I can do it myself?

  • Curators also do not have the ability to merge items, this is only possible for 'moderators' at the moment. Do not know who of us curators is also a moderator for the Kanji section. Right now there is a lot of real and 'false' (e.g. Kanji character versus Kanji word - 雨-rain and 雨-あめ) duplicates. As far as I checked the most pressing improvements are on adding all the missing information for Kanji first and then start the clean-up. For the moment, I think it will be best if you report duplicates and other mistakes in this thread, that a curator/moderator will notice for sure.
