Need a native speaker to record some audio for you?

Or perhaps some help with editing the wiki for a new topic. Post here to ask for whatever help you need.

And let me know if I can do anything to make it easier for you to collaborate,

Thanks

Ben

  • I think you should post the instructions for recording audio here.

  • I would like the Norwegian courses I'm learning to have audio...

I've tried to convince my Norwegian brother-in-law to join memrise so that he could add the audio himself, but I've failed so far.

I'm sure that must be some Norwegian people already in memrise, so please help in this matter!

  • @Robodl95, very good point:

This is how to mass record audio for the whole of a wordlist:

    1. download audacity - it is an excellent free recording program http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

    2. click on a set that you wish to record audio for

    3. click "download" to download a spreadsheet

    4. open audacity and press record

    5. read down the words on spreadsheet one by one, leaving a gap of approx. 1 second between each item.

    6. you need to make sure that you read in exactly the order of the spreadsheet. Any mistakes will result in audio going to the wrong word. It might be best to break the spreadsheet up into sets of 50 or so to get around this issue.

    7. once you have reached the end of the set that you are recording, press "stop".

    8. export the file as a .wav file by clicking "file" export" and selecting ".wav" as the file type.

    9. email the file along with the spreadsheet to ben@memrise.com - it might help to compress the .wav file if it is very large.

  • @Paulo.Rpgerio>pereira, you don't actually have to get him to join - just follow the instructions above, get him to read down the list, and you should be good to go!

Let me know if I can do anything to help,

    Best wishes

    Ben

  • It would be really nice to have some Irish audio, a lot of the lessons I've looked at so far don't have them or have very few of them.

Posted by catsstealporkchops 4/17/12 (1 year ago)
  • @benwhately, my brother-in-law is in Norway and I'm in Portugal. I might try that in a few months.

  • If anyone would like me to record some English for them, I am available. I am an American, so please take that into consideration if you would prefer a British English-speaker.

  • I'd like to hear a Russian voice saying each word in the beginners' Russian course; only some words have audio at the moment.

  • It would be great to have audio on the Czech courses. R hacek and CH are so difficult (make that impossible) to pronounce and it would be wonderful to hear them said correctly.

  • why does it have to be a latin American?

Posted by Estrelleta 5/17/12 (1 year ago)
  • Hi! I'm from Latin America and will be bringing the awesomeness by recording the audio for Spanish today :D

Posted by oliviaz 5/18/12 (1 year ago)
  • It is funny you should say that! I was JUST recording some of the audio for that today... am sending to Ben right now, I think it would be good for people to hear a couple different accents though. I am a Spaniard.

Posted by Estrelleta 5/18/12 (1 year ago)
  • Yes I agree, having different accents will be cool for people, there are so many of them for Spanish!! Looking forward to listening to yours :D

  • Yay, more Spanish audio on memrise!

  • I would do some sound for Norwegian, but after looking at the conventions it seems like only "bokmål" speech is allowed. I'm from up north so I all three articles and pronounce a lot of words differently. Norwegian only has standard forms when written, every major city (and all cities and villages) have different variations on speech. So that being said, can I record or do I have to find some people living in or near Oslo and make them do it?

Posted by StellaV 6/13/12 (11 months ago)
  • Would so love to have more Norwegian!

My friend from Bodø usually tells me how they would say it in bokmål, so I thought that other people who do not speak the same way as they do in Oslo could still reproduce it? If you cannot, asking someone you know to do it would be much, much appreciated!

I would love to hear a few variations on how words may be pronounced, but I think I would prefer to learn the standard version first, and then learn to recognize and understand others. Does that make sense?

Posted by Estrelleta 6/13/12 (11 months ago)
  • I haven't read all of the above, so I hope I'm not repeating, but:

Has anyone checked out the website Forvo? It has a massive database of pronunciation audio files, which, once you sign up, are allowed to download. These can then be uploaded onto words!

  • Hey, I would love to learn Malay and would go through the Speak Malay couse adding mems, if anyone could help with providing pronounciation. :D

  • Is it possible to just add audio for a part of the word list, as long as it is stated in the e-mail where it starts and stops? Have done 300 words for a Norwegian course, but now my roommate is coming home and I don't think he will appreciate med saying random words while he is working.

  • I am trying to create and new lesson for Korean but having some difficulty with the audio. I don't want to finish typing 800 words in Korean and English to find there is an easier way. I have the audacity software but how do I download a spreadsheet?(step 3 of the previous instructions) Can I just send an excel spreadsheet with the words and the recording?
