Add images to an item?

As opposed to the representation? For example, an image of a 9 of Spades instead of S9?

  • Excellent question. At the moment, although there are courses like this, the interface to make them is not slick: in fact you need to use a bit of a hack to do it:

1 - create a course 2 - open up any random item in another window. Try this one as an example: http://www.memrise.com/item/521282/to-obtain-13/ 3 - click "add a mem", then "upload image" 4 - choose the image that you want to upload to your wordlist. 5 - once it has uploaded, copy the link that appears, and paste it into the "add word" field in your new course. 6 - then add in the definition. 7 - remember not to save the mem!

Apologies that this process is not yet very slick, we are going to work on improving it and making a proper interface for it soon.

Please let me know if you have any problems,

    Thanks

  • Are images uploaded this way going to be persistent on the long run?

Posted by yonatan 4/5/12 (1 year ago)
  • No! This is definitely only a work around for the time being. We are going to make a much slicker system, but it is going to take us a little while to fit that into the development schedule. It is on the way though.

    Thanks

  • So far this works fine for uploading images, however when I try using the course I am having a small problem. At the moment I have a few images uploaded as the "words" and then the word for the image is the "definition." This works fine when it asks for multiple choice or if it asks me to type the definition, but I am also being asked to type the word (which is actually a picture). How do I prevent this from happening?

  • @kielcj, this depends on the topic that you have created the course in - which topic is it? could you send me a link to the course? It is possible that we need to put it into a topic where the testing is done in a more fitting way.

  • The title of the course is bones of the human body, under the topic of biology.

    http://www.memrise.com/set/10021280/bones-of-the-human-body/

I was hoping to have either multiple choice where the user would recognize the name or image, or to have the image shown and the user would have to recall the name of the bone to type it in. it does both of those so far, but also shows the name of the bone and asks for the user to type the image.

    Thanks

  • I have flipped the columns around for you, which should fix the issue. The other option would be to create a new topic for "biology form photos", but I think that just flipping the columns works just as well in this case. Let me know if you think that that is not the case,

    Thanks

  • Just tried it and it seems to work great. Thank you

    Posted by _deleted_130416_0654_18 4/9/12 (1 year ago)
  • Its coming along nicely now, however there is another slight problem. Since all of the definitions are pictures, the multiple choice is a little too easy. sometimes it will give the name of the word and ask for a definition (the picture), but only give one picture as a choice (which will obviously be the only possible choice). Is there a way to pick what goes into the multiple choice answers, or have the course pick only the answers from that course?

    Posted by _deleted_130416_0654_18 4/9/12 (1 year ago)
  • If there are more than 10 items in the set, then the multiple choice options will all be taken from within that set, which should mean that you will then only get other images as the other options. Please let me know if you have any trouble with that and I will check it out.

    Thanks

  • Hi Ben, Im trying to create a new course for the Dotsies font (http://www.memrise.com/set/10024587/dotsies-font-2/). I uploaded 26 images and got their links. Adding one by one seems to work, but is a bit tedious so I tried uploading a spreadsheet with 'Word' and 'Definition' headers. I used the links (like " as Word entries. Initially this seemed to work, but the interfaces keeps endlessly checking the wiki for entries and when I refresh only the first 7 words are added. Any idea why this might be? Slighty unrelated, but when I try to remove a word from the course Im told something is wrong.

  • There were a couple of bugs with this yesterday, they should now have neen fixed. Could you give it another go and see if you still have issues?

    Thanks and best wishes

  • So I checked today again and had the same issue of getting only the first 7 entries when uploading a .xls. Also, like kielcj, I would like to prevent the system from presenting a definition and asking for user input of 'words' (these are the images). Is there a way I can swap colums myself?

Posted by phillchill 5/8/12 (1 year ago)
  • @phillchill, could you send me the spreadsheet (ben@memrise.com) so that I can take a look at it?

I think that your issue is different to kielcj, but I may be misunderstanding. Which topic have you put your set in? the test direction depends on the topic settings. So if it is in a topic which has picture sets in it, then it will be set up not to test from the pictures. If it isn't, then It might be set up that way, or it might not. If it isn't then we can move it to a more suitable topic. So let me know and we can get it fixed up.

  • Hey Ben, I'm trying to create an American Sign Language course on memrise. I've done a lot of work figuring out how to convert videos of me signing vocabulary to gifs, but when I follow your instructions to make this gif my file, nothing happens. I have the link in the word box and I've written in a definition, but when I click "Add," it just sits there. Any help...?

Posted by yakobu 6/10/12 (11 months ago)
  • Sorry that you are having this trouble - it seems like you have uploaded a couple of gifs now - have you worked out what was going wrong, or not? If you have got quite a few of them, it might be easiest to do it with a spreadsheet upload: paste the url for the image into the "sign" column, and the meaning into the "English" column, and then upload the spreadsheet to the list.

Let me know if you need any help with that,

    Best wishes

  • Hello, I was wondering if another way to upload images has been added? I'm a really new user and I'm trying to make a new course for Constellations in the Southern Hemisphere - except I can't get the html in the mem method described at the start of this thread for uploading. It will show a picture, but I won't get any url to place in the word list :( I get stuck their as it's a visual learning course

    Thank you.

  • @weavers, thank you very much for pointing this out - it looks like this has been broken by the recent updates. I will work out a new way to do this (which will hopefully be a bit slicker than the old way as well!)

Thank you very much for reporting this,

    Best wishes

  • Hi Ben, I also would like to create a course that exclusively uses images as the definition. Please let me know as soon as there is progress here. Thanks!

Posted by EtyMed 7/7/12 (10 months ago)
  • Thanks for your help with everything, Ben. Please keep us all updated on the progress of features helping to teach ASL on Memrise. Just curious, does the "hack" of getting sign .gif files into Memrise just not work anymore, is it just different, or has it been broken with the recent updates to how images are uploaded to mems?

Posted by yakobu 7/9/12 (10 months ago)
  • Sorry for the delay, we have not yet got the smooth interface for adding images to a course, but there is now a way to do it much as before. This is the new hack:

1 - create a course 2 - open up the forums page 3 - click "start new discussion," then "upload image" 4 - choose the image that you want to upload to your wordlist. 5 - once it has uploaded, copy the link that appears, and paste it into the "add word" field in your new course. 6 - then add in the definition. 7 - remember not to save the discussion!

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions,

    Best wishes

    Ben

  • Great! Thank you Ben :D

  • I just used the new hack to add about 20 more signs to my course, "ASL Vocab and More." All ya'll should check it out! Also, Ben--how do I get my course featured? Do I have to reach a certain amount of words or something?

Posted by yakobu 7/10/12 (10 months ago)
  • Hey yakobu, I have a question that maybe you could answer for me? I posted it on your wall. Thx!

Posted by EtyMed 7/10/12 (10 months ago)
  • Thanks! I'll get to finishing my course :D

Posted by weavers 7/10/12 (10 months ago)
  • It seems to be a bit of a hit and miss. When uploading a picture should I wait a bit before pasting the html?

Posted by weavers 7/11/12 (10 months ago)
  • Coming in to comment again, sorry! I've got the images uploading fine and I'm slowly adding the images. You've been a great help so far :) (the hit and miss earlier was me not adding the img: part of the html, doh!)

But I'm experiencing a similar problem as kielcj did 3 months ago. I was giving it a trial run when a definition popped up (Southern Cross) where it asked me to type in the answer - the answer which would be a picture?

I think I need to flip my name column and my stars column like you did with kielcj but I am not sure how to go about it. I'd really rather not delete the ones I've made, I haven't got a copy of the other info I've been adding D:

Posted by weavers 7/11/12 (10 months ago)
  • could you paste in a link to the course? then I will get it fixed for you right away,

Posted by benwhately 7/11/12 (10 months ago)
  • here it is! http://www.memrise.com/set/10034005/constellationsstars-in-the-southern-hemisphere-2/

Some of the results might hamper people's learning because you can't type in a picture.

Similarly, sometimes a photo will show up and some of the multiple choice answers are photos of other constellations. Is there a way to disable that? So a question/answer combo is only ever word/photo and not a photo/photo or word/word?

Thanks a lot Ben! :D You're working hard today!

  • this should be fixed now, thanks!

  • It works great now! I'll finish uploading the rest of the mems tomorrow. Thanks a bunch! :D

  • Hi Ben,

Is the 'hack' described above still the only way to add images? I thought I'd try my luck; and so, for my course with the database format:

    Image English

I tried to do a bulk upload by pasting the following:

    <url1> <english1>; <url2> <english2>; <url3> <english3>;

But when I click the 'Add' button, nothing happens.

Is the current method still only via uploading images in a temporary forum discussion?

    Thank you :)
