There doesn't seem to be a limit since images get scaled, I have seen people with pictures as big as 1MB and dimensions in the thousands by thousands of pixels but a good rule of thumb is to keep it under 2MB. As for why it didn't work at first when I uploaded the picture is due to you having to confirm your mother Tongue/Language before saving your changes.
