Danish characters ø and å

First of all thanks to the people who made word lists for Danish, being able to expand my vocab and practise spelling in an enjoyable way means a lot to me as I have relatives there.

For the memrise team: The Danish language has 3 characters in addition to the 26 used in English: æ, ø and å. As someone with a keyboard lacking these keys it's great that memrise accepts o and a for the latter two but I feel like I am ultimately misleading my brain as they are not technically correct spellings. Have you considered adding a small character set like the one available for French? Alternatively, would it be possible for memrise to also accept "oe" for ø and "aa" for å? These are widely recognised substitutes, particularly in electronic communication when people don't have the appropriate keys available. It would be consistent with using ae for æ in any case.

I believe the Norwegian language is the same in this respect and Swedish might be the same (with slightly different characters) but I'm not so sure about it.

Thanks!

  • Hi Torbjorn.. The Norwegian section now has the letters æ, ø and å available vie a mouse click.. I am sure it is only a question of time before they roll them out for the danish section too.. unfortunately though, meanwhile, they still accept standard letters in tests too. I hope this changes with time.

  • Ok, I have set up the in browser keyboard for you, so those letters should now appear. I hope that helps!
