It's a favourite manga of mine, but sadly only a single volume was ever translated. So one of my goals is to be able to read it on my own (and if I ever reach a high enough level of competence maybe do an actual translation).
I've got sounding out kana down pretty well. The biggest hurdle right now is probably just learning basic phrases so when I land on a kanji or something I don't know I can find the meaning and piece it together. I'll just work on general things and keep coming back to MiJ and learn new kanji as they come. And thanks! I'll try my best! Good luck to you too.
Ah, you surprised me, I had forgotten to check on that LOL. Well thank you very much. I've been at it for 6 months now. 5000 was one of my goals, supposedly it's the level of a lowly educated native.
My next goal is be under 100th and the following one is to catch up with jennifer and this one is just about impossible :0)
Yep, I'm talking about jenniferhunter, 18th right now but she ws 13th last week. She is a learning beast. Her and ferret are my competitors in my mempals LOL.
I too noticed those users with few words and high points, probably only cheaters exploiting a glitch in the site. Honestly I don't care about point and position, you are right that the number of words learned is the main goal. I admit thought that chasing something is fun.
I'm not sure I'm a good example of how to learn but it works for me:
1st I focus on Mems, I create my own, if they don't work I modify them, I always use the same idea for the same syllable, i.e. zar is always tsar.
Keep in mind that Spanish is easier for me since it is so close to French. I would approximate the number of similar words to 40 to 50%.
Every day I water all wilting plants, and more if more pop during my session. (898 after Memrise came back online LOL)
My planting has changed a bit, I mean slowed down. For the 1st 4000-4500 words I swallowed them easily at a rate of 50 a day.
Here is my theory...if you learn 10 words at a success rate of 90% and I learn 100 words at a success rate of 9% then we both have learned 9 words right! But I have been exposed to 90 more words than you so I feel I would have an advantage since those would be pre-learned. Furthermore, the more I am exposed to the patterns of a language the more I learn it, maybe not words but I acquire more feeling for the language.
In most case the combination of those elements allow me to guess or make-up words I don't know and often get them correct. One major factor in learning anything is exposure to that anything.
Also my approach to Memrise might be different to some users. To me the Plant Seeds session is not a learning session, it's just an introduction to new words. Sure I pay attention to the word, the spelling, etc. and I study my Mem but when I click on next that doesn't mean I have learned the word. This will take place during testing. Either I know it "el centro-the centre" ok I learned this one right away or I don't "el centro de entretenimiento" and I will hammer it in my mind during the multiple testing failures. I do not look at those failures as "jeez, I still don't know it" but rather as "ah, I kinda remembered the pattern of the word, I'm getting closer to the correct spelling".
Other than during watering session I do not go to a course to visually review words except for 2 courses I uploaded. One is numeral ordinal, 40th to 90th give me trouble so I look at them once in a while. The other course simply is a list of accented words, I add to it as I go.
At the current time I have somehow reduced the number of words I learn because of different reasons. First I had liked to consolidate the vocabulary learnt. I realize that words I don't use in conversation get forgotten so adding new ones wouldn't really help. Second I made the mistake to not learn conjugations as I went on with vocabulary, that puts me in an awful position when it comes to conversation so I uploaded several conjugation courses and I'm working mainly on those (hard and slow for me).
A last word..."learning" big amounts as I originally did comes with a price that actually is an advantage. Every day I have to review 250-300 words during the 1st watering session so once more it gives me more exposure. During my learning session I probably get an additional 100 words to review. I am currently working on 24 courses. Even in my current progression I "learn" every day 10-15 words from a difficult list and around 25 from an easier one.
Also since I am a curator and I often disagree with definitions I do a lot of research on words. This helps a lot in seeing the words as not so abstract.
I believe these are the basics of my learning process, worked for me thus far.

Hey,
I just added you as a mempal if you don't mind. I have kind of been following your trail of bread crums on this site unintentionally. And your writings have given me a bit of inspiration to continue to learn Japanese. I'm not entirely sure if you're still active in the community, but it does seem that you have made an impact. I thank you for your passions.
