Saint Peter's Basilica (Vatican City)

The **Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican** (exact name Papale Arcibasilica Patriarcale Maggiore Arcipretale di **San Pietro in Vaticano**) has the largest interior of any Christian church in the world. While Saint Peter's Basilica is neither the mother church of the Roman Catholic Church nor the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, Saint Peter's is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic sites and is one of the four Major Basilicas of the Catholic Church. In the fourth century, Roman Emperor Constantine the Great built Old St. Peter's Basilica on the burial site of the apostle Saint Peter. The list of architects of the present basilica includes many famous artists: Donato Bramante, Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, Raphael, Michelangelo, Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, Giacomo della Porta, Carlo Maderno and Gianlorenzo Bernini. by azrael42
