to fail

失 (shī - to fail) looks a LOT like 矢 (shĭ - arrow) with the arrow failing to be notched into the bow, like a clumsy archer, which makes a sure failure. Also note that it is the same tone as husband, 夫 fū, which is just one stroke different. by chinasteve
