Vermeer

Johannes Jan Vermeer, 1632-1675, Dutch. One of the great Dutch artists, Vermeer is today possibly best known for his portrait of a young woman which became the subject of the novel and movie "Girl With a Pearl Earring". This was typical of the domestic scenes that are featured in his work. He is noted for his use of perspective and tonal contrast (chiaroscuro) which enabled him to achieve a level of realism that was groundbreaking. by wordcustard
