when intending to look at the second highest rated mnemonic(or other category) it jumps to the 3rd instead(and then 5th and so on). So if you want to look at the second highest rated mnemonic you have to hope that there is an uneven number of mnemonics and go to the last one - and then go back to the second one. is that intendet?

The formatting for that seems to have been bugged. But you're supposed to be able to "reply" to comments on your garden wall (or at least my wall implies that) so you will have multiple "comment" areas. (although the fact they don't nest to make it obvious bothers me)
If I look at my wall I can:
1) Post on my wall
2) Reply to Yami's comment
3) Reply to ikenaiAndi's comment

This is really weird: When I get a word wrong and don't like the first mem I go through the mems. What's weird is that it seems to always jump over one. so if I have 3 mems I can only see nr.1 & 3.
Could be that my browser/computer tries to entertain me - but I thought I would let you know.

Interesting... with 4 mems, it gave me 1, skipped 2, displayed 3, and then (I guess because there were no more odd-numbered ones) it allowed me to view #4, and then when I went backwards, it went from 4 to 2. So with an even number of mems, I can view them all, I just have to do it in two passes, doing the odd ones in the forward direction until it reaches the last (even numbered) mem, and then backwards through the rest of the even numbered mems.

I just encountered this same issue (with this word: http://www.memrise.com/item... ).
There are four mems present for this particular word. The viewing order is:

I've had it twice now that I had to water 1 plant. During the watering I ignored the word. The quiz then gets stuck: only the left menu and the arrow on the right side show. The arrow does not respond though. The only way to continue at this point is to use one of the menu items on the left.

A user created word lists for Hungarian-German (Ungarisch) but put them initially in Hungarian-English. Now the entries from those list are stuck in the Hungarian-English dictionary, and even as Curator I cannot remove them. Any good solution at hand?

The list has disappeared. There are several "ghost" lists that have bad vocab items, and some of these items still show up in the Hungarian dictionary.

When I select "more learning options" -> "Pronounciation" I have been asked both to translate from Kana to Kana, and from English to English. The specific course where I ran in to the problem is "n5-kanji", but the problem seems to be independent of the course.

Can you possible give an example of which word this is happening on? Some of the words accidentally got moved to the wrong topic, causing them to test incorrectly. Maybe this is what is happening.

It seems there is a bug in the mems, clicking back and forth on the arrows seems to skip some mems.

I'm seeing some odd behaviour which only started happening after I discovered the ignore feature.
The most common oddness is that after ignoring a word in a set, many subsequent words have the word answer in brackets after it. e.g. in Italian I see at the top of the page:
"Il lavandino (sink"
Note the one leading bracket above, this always occurs.
I also notice that words I've already harvested are popping up in new word lists, i.e. after I go to 'plant' new words, old harvested words are appearing as if they've never been viewed before.
I've also noticed certain words keep getting repeated, for some reason "Il collare' keeps showing up in the greenhouse, randomly appearing amongst new words.
All of these issues only occurred after I started using the ignore functionality. It's really frustrating as I've worked through 500+ words and now many of those keep showing up as new.

I don't have a ranking; when I am actually learning works under my name it just says "Ranking: None," but when I go to the leaderboard it tells me my rank. Is this a bug because you can have different rankings, either for day/week/month/alltime/etc?

I think it doesn't show any ranking if it is over 9000 (I do not remember the exact figures). The rank refers to the Alltime-everyone rank. Wait until you have climbed a bit on the ladder and it should show up.

When you go to the leaderboard, it shows your ranking relative to the others who joined at the same time you did, but you only get a global ranking attached to your name after a certain number of points (not sure how many).

If anyone writes in my garden wall, I get an email telling me they have. I like this and don't want this to change. Also, when something is added to a thread where I wrote, I get an email. Again, I don't want this to change.
But when I reply to someone who wrote in my wall, I also get an email informing me of what I have done. It sounds a bit silly to me.
And I get double emails when someone replies to me in my wall: one because something was written in my wall, and one because someone wrote in Pilar_Pereira's profile.

Good point - I think that you are getting double emails because one is in response to there being a post on your wall, and one because there has been a reply to a thread that you are subscribed to. We should put in a check to make sure we don't send duplicates though.

So I just tried to add a Sample to a word and was surprised to see the new format. There might be a reason why we are required to use the full word including the article but that makes it a huge mess/impossibility.
My example: Sardinas en lata...ah but I can't stick the article in that.
Sure I could cheat and write: Sardinas en lata (la lata)...not so brilliant huh?

I think this new sample format is good, as it brings a structure to the samples, and i guess will ultimately make them searchable or allow them to be part of the wiki, but i agree with sfrenchie that it's a little rigid as it now stands, and needs some tweaking.
Also, what if we wish to add samples of the word with alternative base language definitions? the way it currently is, it looks like we can only give samples of the main word definition?
and will there be a way to integrate old samples into the new format?

for the czech language, it makes it difficult to come up with examples for reflexive verbs in which the reflexive particle gets separated from the verb.

Thanks for all these thoughts - it is a very rigid structure at the moment, but we are working to make it more and more flexible and it will be improving a lot over the coming few days. While we do, we have switched back to the old sample adding tool as the primary interface, and then you can click the text saying "add sample translation" to flick to the new interface.
Please do have a play around with it though and let us know of any other issues that you come across and we will adapt the system to let them work.

One thing that I think is useful to be able to do with sample sentences, is sometimes give short explanations.. as an example this is a sample mem I created a while ago for the czech word "o":
Examples of accusative:
opřit se o co (to lean against something)
opřít kolo o zeď - to lean a bike against a wall
Mám o tebe starost. - I'm worried for you.
examples with locative:
Mluvíme o Petrovi. - We're talking about Peter.
Tato kniha je o historii České republiky. - This book is about the history of the Czech Republic.
o tři roky mladši ((by) 3 years younger)
o půlnoci (at midnight)
obviously this is a preposition, so it is a little tricker than some words, but I think it's useful seeing several samples next to each other like this, and i especially like that i can se samples with the preposition in different cases side by side..
with the new format, it looks like it will only be possible to add one sentence at a time, meaning we'll have to click a lot more to see more.. something i am personally not too keen on.
so, somethings i'd like to see are
1. room for an extra comment to clarify something within the sample.
2. maybe find a way to show more than one sample from the same author together.
3. obviously, I think, there needs to be a way to make samples with the alternate meanings too.
4. any bracketed addition at the end of a word needs to be removed, as they are often there giving additional info about a word, making it really impossible to add a sample properly..
5. maybe, to make the system less rigid, find a way to mark the word so it doesn't have to be identical to the wiki entry.. maybe once one is created, queue it somewhere for a moderator to verify it, so that it fits in as it should with the test system you plan.

(http://www.memrise.com/thre...), as far as i am aware this is the longest standing most annoying bug with memrise.. i am forever not finding words in the dictionary that i know are there.. it's especially annoying as it hinders moderating.. for example, if i go to add a confusable to a word, it doesn't always find it.. which means often i'm basically just wasting my time trying to add them..
i'm surpised this bug has not been reported more often, perhaps it doesn't show up with every language..

Firstly can I just say how incredibly happy I am to have been told about memrise... literally will save my life in mandarin, if it will work!
Before, it was hardly working at all on Safari on Mac in the UK, but a friend in NZ got my account to work. Once the seed has been sown, so to say, the page loads and lets me 'water', however sometimes, quite frequently when trying to plant new seeds, it just gets stuck on loading...

During a testing session I sometimes get logged out. The session will continue, but the points will no longer register and at the end of the session it just hangs. Could you add a mechanism that keeps us logged in?

I think I've only experienced it 2 or 3 times, recently and a long time ago. I think what is happening is the site has a 'timeout' period where if it doesn't see any activity from a user for say like 24 hours it logs the user out, but a testing session isn't getting logged for some reason.

Another thing I do is leave the tab open on my browser, so Firefox might just be caching the page and the site doesn't 'see' me. So, when I first open my browser at the beginning of the day, Firefox gives me the cached version of my dashboard. Then, I click on 'water now' and the testing session begins.
So, maybe, the site doesn't see activity from me because I have the cached copy of the site. Then, the site doesn't read my ID when I start the session, so it doesn't see the activity and then the timeout happens in the middle of the testing session?

The extra letters of Vietnamese need to be added ĂÂÊÔƠƯĐ for typing the word, also the 5 tone markers ÀÁẠÃẢ. SHould be able to do as for example my spanish lists have Ó Á ect.

Sure I can add these - just to confirm, I will add each letter with the accent on it, but exactly as you give it to me - do you want these all as upper case letters? For the tone marks, do those need to go over every letter? or just over the letter "A"? To use the current system I will need to create a button for each character that you need to have added in to the in browser keyboard. so if there needs to be tone marks for every letter, then we will need to think of a different solution.

These are the extra letter and there is alot so I understand if you don't want to add but at the same time the without right tone the word has different meaning or means something else. If someone is learning Vietnamese tones/ different vowels are absolutely essential or they will not be understood. I want to have memrise be good for this as other websites are very bad. If we can fix this somehow would be great to have letters to type(viet) and have the system know when you use wrong letter for instance đ is recognized as d in system when answer should be wrong. Love memrise have created one proper vietnamese course (all definitions correct and all audio unlike the others) if we can fix these two issues would love to create much larger courses.

@nerd, for Spanish that is a deliberate setting, because that is currently the way that most users find that it works well for them, and the user settings to change that are not yet live on the site. They will be soon, so that individuals can choose to be tested strictly should they want to be.
For Vietnamese though the marking *should* be strict on accents. I guess that means that it is not registering those as "accents" for some reason to do with how they are encoded. I will check into this for you and see what we can do to get it working properly.

I am going to find out soon whether we can do this right away for the vietnamese (ie in the next week) - that seems like an easier issue to fix. The Spanish feature will come in a bit later once we have built the user settings which will take a bit of time.

In the italian GCSE course it's benvenuti but in the 100 core words it's benvenuto. Perhaps both are correct depending on how many people are doing the welcoming. Could both answers be permitted on both course?

I just noticed that several of the words I am just seeing for the first time appear as if I have given them a thumbs down. Meaning that the thumbs down icon is already highlighted a darker gray than usual. It's not on all newly seen words, but once I noticed it, I've seen it on 4 or 5 new words today. I don't know if you can see which ones I gave a thumbs up on today, but a couple of the ones I did were simply to remove what I thought was an accidental thumbs down that I hadn't intended to give. Some of my thumbs up were genuine thumbs up, though, so you may not be able to tell which were "buggy thumbs" and which were intentional.

Sorry that isn't clear, we will try to tweak the design to make it clearer.
But that doesn't change the fact that when you see new words the mems should not be already rated. Could you possibly give me a couple of examples of when this has happened? If you don't remember any, then could you take note if it happens again? That will make it much faster to track down the cause.

Ok, found one: for the word "Now" xian4, the first pronunciation mem showed up with a thumbs down on it. I left it as I found it, but when I went forward through all the rest of the mems, and then backward back to the first one, the thumbs down was gone. If I find another one, I won't even scroll through the rest of the mems.

It's on "to hear" wen2 and the last pronunciation mem "The guard put his ear 2 the gate TO HEAR if some - WEN was there." by edreamer. I would not have given this a thumbs down, so edreamer, if it says I gave you a thumbs down, I didn't!
I'm now remembering a few times where I noticed a thumbs down in the past, and at the time, I just assumed I had accidentally bumped the thumbs down in previous passes through some of the vocabulary. iPads can be a bit touchy that way, but now I believe this bug may have been around for awhile. I hope I'm giving you meaningful data that will help you isolate and fix it.

And then I went back up to the Mnemonics (just checking to see if the glitch would show up there) and when came back to the Pronunciation mem that I had just given the thumbs up, it also had a thumbs down again.

This function needs a bit of work. If I ignore a word I'm still getting tested on it (sometimes) so I have to ignore it again during the test.

Ben, this bug is getting really annoying. I'm working on a list in which I have to ignore lots of entries I don't find useful. The more I skip, the more words get stuck in the Seeds screen. Those words are not the ones I skipped, they are some words that I learned but do not get to the learned garden. I cannot see (and edit) the next set. Also the same unsaved words pop over and over in the quizzes. Let me know if you need a screenshot.

This does sound really really annoying. Sorry for my delay in replying; just trying to get a firm answer on when we can get this fixed. I still haven't got that firm answer, but I thought I would reply to let you know that I hadn't forgotten you, and that we are working on it. The way we deal with ignored words is one of the big things that we need to fix urgently, and it will be right at the top of the list next week.
I also think that this is being compounded by a different issue in this case - I think that the words that you can't edit are words that have been moved to another topic, and that is also causing trouble with the scheduling. Could you leave a note on any of these items and I will switch them back - the tell-tale signs are that the field names might be "word" and "definition", rather than "Spanish" and "english", and that at the top of the page when you are on a word detail page it will say "SPanish - karen's...." rather than just "Spanish". This does sound really really annoying. Sorry for my delay in replying; just trying to get a firm answer on when we can get this fixed. I still haven't got that firm answer, but I thought I would reply to let you know that I hadn't forgotten you, and that we are working on it. The way we deal with ignored words is one of the big things that we need to fix urgently, and it will be right at the top of the list next week.
I also think that this is being compounded by a different issue in this case - I think that the words that you can't edit are words that have been moved to another topic, and that is also causing trouble with the scheduling. Could you leave a note on any of these items and I will switch them back - the tell-tale signs are that the field names might be "word" and "definition", rather than "Spanish" and "english", and that at the top of the page when you are on a word detail page it will say "SPanish - karen's...." rather than just "Spanish". Another clue of my skipping issue:
it takes 1 or 2 days for things to get back to normal, meaning the problem clears up. Today I see in the seeds list the words that were stuck, that I hadn't 'learned', yet I had been quizzed on over and over.

I tried planting those seed and no way Jose. I click on Plan button and instead of 'learning' them I am being tested on them yet they stay in the Seeds to be planted screen so basically I'm stuck.

Each time I click on the "Connect with Facebook" link, the page simply refreshes without actually doing anything - I've tried this in both Chrome and Firefox with the same result. Is anyone else having the same problem?

First off, thanks a lot for the improvements on the word list modification page - this has made making changes about 100x easier.
However: when I'm adding words to a large list of words (namely "Simon's assorted words") with my preferred browser - Chrome - everything goes really, really slowly. I know this is not my computer's fault (2 year old desktop, quad core, 4GB RAM), especially considering Firefox works a lot quicker even on my netbook.

When I'm using the Japanese keyboard layout, I can't use digit keys to choose an answer. Probably either caused by the IME, or because the digits are full-width. Not sure which one. I guess it can be fixed by using an event that works on virtual keys, and not on characters.

- I selected to plant new seeds in my garden.
- Halfway through—on first seeing a word—I noticed that a mnemonic was incorrect.
- I click on the 'comment' link for the mnemonic. This brought up the mnemonic "lightbox" for commenting… the background became dimmed.
- After entering my comment I pressed to save it.

Nothing major but under the box where you enter the name of the state or the state capital the text says "type the country for the capital" and could be more accurate.

Today I have several mandarin words that are staying wilting no matter how many times they are watered. I always get the english meaning test, never the pinyin pronunciation. I notice that when I click on the page for the word they are showing up as being in the course "10 history" which seems odd.
The words include England, China, Blue, younger brother, older sister and cow milk

I finished HSK 1 and while it showed me the pronunciation of a handful of words like 人, once I harvested all 393 words it didn't give me the option to Plant More from the cave.
I'm doing HSK 2 but I wanted to simultaneously work on HSK 1 pronunciation and It's not really clear how to continue with that (that's a feature suggestion yo!), so from the HSK 1 Wordlist page, I clicked More Options and selected Pronunciation (if Reading was selected before why did it already start showing me some Pronunciation questions without my help?).
Anyway, I clicked Plant from that page and got some...rather perplexing multiple choice questions that looked like these:

The way that the pronunciation works is that once you have been tested on a character's meaning a few times, it will start introducing the pronunciation testing. You don't need to "plant" it again to get the pronunciation; it is the same seed, just another kind of test on it. So if you just keep on watering your wilting flowers in the HSK1 set then you will get tested on those pronunciations.
I will check out this bug with planting words while setting particular test types - I suspect that that just shouldn't be allowed to happen, because you should only be able to set test types once you have harvested a plant. I will get it fixed right away, thanks for the heads up!

I have two plants in my garden, http://www.memrise.com/item... and http://www.memrise.com/item... that always are marked 'ready to water'.
If I water them, they aren't considered done or anything, they just get stuck in that state. They're simple words that I'm answering correctly, I get points for them, they just never have enough water or something.

@jenniferhunter I can confirm that all thirsty plants have 10 History at the top. Of the plants I just watered 1 of them was also a 10 History plant, and has indeed moved to the permanently thirsty group. As per which instructions? I don't see any comment option, only a discuss field on the word.

the comment field is the discuss field - if you click on the word's link, you should see two tabs - "mems" and "discussion". Select the discussion tab and post an entry "constantly wilting" Alternately, you could search the mandarin dictionary - easiest way I know is to go to the mandarin forum and on the top right, there should be a tab labeled "dictionary". Just input either the character or the definition, click on the entry, and you should get the word's page. Then, just click on discussion, as stated above.

Sometimes when I water my plants (usually when I water the long-term ones) the server will do this thing where, after each answer, it automatically moves on to the next question, without the pause that indicates whether the answer was correct or not

I don't know if this is a bug exactly, but...
I have a frustrating problem. I uploaded a spreadsheet of 450 common Turkish nouns I want to learn (the 'common turkish nouns' course). I paid careful attention to spelling, etc. However, when I uploaded the list, my correctly-spelled words were replaced with misspelled ones. E.g. 'doğu' was replaced with 'dogu' and 'barış' with 'barıs'. 'ğ' and 'g' are not the same letter, they represent phonemes and as such have distinct pronunciations and can cause a difference in meaning when used incorrectly. Likewise with 's' and 'ş'. I'd really appreciate it if this could be fixed, it took me forever to make the spreadsheet. Thanks!

Today when I come back to the forum to try to add to our previous thread about the thumbs down, suddenly all the icons for the posts in the forums are HUGE, and trying to find the previous thread is really tedious (as in I keep thinking "this can't be right!" and going back to refresh the screen, hoping it will reload back to "normal" ) I'm on iPad 2 with iOS 5.1. For example, As I write this, I'm looking at the icon for the user named "nerd" which is the "no pictuire" icon and it covers half of the height of my screen (in landscape orientation) and about 1/5 of the width. So, this "no picture" icon takes up 1/10 of the entire screen! I scroll down to the next message, and there is Ben's icon of the man holding up a baby (adorable picture, by the way!) which covers all but about 1 inch from top to bottom on my screen (and again, about 1/5 of the width). In order to find our previous thread, I will have to scroll past lots and lots of messages with these huge icons just to find my original thread. Some of the pictures are actually larger then my entire iPad display!

First it wasn't adding points each time I got a word correct. It just skipped them half the time and showed I only had 500 point for 49 correct words. Then at the end of the set it wouldn't budge off loading. After several F5 attempts to refresh, I clicked on "reload this page" (google chrome) and I got thrown over to a "hello new user" screen. I had to go back and log in - which I usually never have to do unless I've just run CC Cleaner.

Hi, I've been experiencing very long initial load times (> 5 minutes) when I try to plant seeds or water my plants. This problem occurs only when loading a section, not after the section is loaded. It's not a major hindrance most times but it's definitely a problem, especially since I have to be there when it finishes to make sure I don't miss words.
Is there maybe something I can fix to lower the load times? It doesn't seem like anyone else has mentioned this problem. My connection is 6 Mbit so that's probably not the issue.
If it's not on my end, I guess it's a bug.

I'm using Windows 7 x64 on both my computers (desktop & laptop) & the laptop didn't load at all (just stuck on the loading screen) whereas the desktop takes 2-5 minutes per session. Hardware speed isn't a problem - I have a 4.5 GHz quad core and a more than capable GPU. Oh, and I've tried using both Chrome and Firefox on both computers (FF with Adblock & Chrome without - NoScript disabled on FF).
By the way, I've been following your Mandarin courses and I am truly blown away. Thanks for that! If only I were back in Beijing... I miss sitting in the tranquility of Beihai Park & frankly everything else about that city.

I will look in to what is causing these load times, because they definitely shouldn't be that slow. Which course are you learning at the moment? I will see if there is anything course specific that might be causing it.

Sorry for the delayed response. I've been learning from Mandarin Survival/Advanced (they seem to be connected) & most recently from HSK 1. I didn't see anyone else with this problem, so I'm going to tweak as many settings as I can and see if I can solve it from here.

By the way, in your Mandarin courses I run across another problem - definitely not an important one, but it irks me. For example, it will show me 学 & expect me to type "to study" but I prefer to type "study" as I don't believe Chinese words should be treated like English infinitives (ex. 我学普通话 isn't "I to study Mandarin"). The issue is that the "to" is required in many (but not all) cases.

- which browser you're using
- where you're located (roughly)
I'm trying to understand why it's affecting only some people, and what we can do to improve the situation.

Every time I water my entire garden in "Who Painted Me Part 2" the picture for Bernini's artwork does not show up. You can always guess the right answer, however, it would be nice to have the visual.

Hi, wrote on here a few weeks ago about my ranking disappearing and 3/4 of the words in the intro German course having lost their audio. Admin asked for the browser I used, I responded with Chrome, but have heard no more since and the problem is not fixed. I know fixing bugs must take some time, but it is hard to learn new words when you have no idea how they are supposed to be pronounced. Help would be appreciated! Thanks! :)

I'm really sorry about this - is your ranking still invisible? If you have less than 50,000 points it will say "no ranking" - is that the issue?
Some audio was removed from the German courses because it was too loud and people were finding it off-putting - but that should only have been about 10%, not as much as 75%. I hadn't realised that the issue was a serious as that. I will check it out again, and do more work to encourage more people to add audio themselves.

Of course we realise that points don't do anything, but it can be motivating to see the totals accumulate as an indicator of achievement - which can be hard to track when learning a language.

Well it's nice to have the points of course. But given that it is a relatively unimportant part of the site, and that this is an entirely free service, I think we can give the memrise team a bit of leeway....

Whichever action I do (plant seeds, grow, or water), the sequence goes fine, but after finishing it, instead of going back the player hangs in the "loading" animation (the animation plays forever). Results are recorded correctly, though (when I hit back and refresh everything updates according to how it went).

When I open the javascript console, there are two 'mpq is not defined' exceptions (meaning something is wrong with how you loaded mixpanel), and a few cross-origin access attempt errors (view.vzaar.com//player trying to access stuff on memrise.com).

In this course there are 60 words. I can see them one by one, but when I'm on the page that says "All 60 words", only 50 appear.

This is still not working correctly. None of the courses show the last page of words if it's not a full page of 100. If the page has 1,064 words, it only shows 10 pages.

Hello, I have an issue doing some Japanese memrise sessions. Every once in a while when I get the question that wants me to type the word displayed in kana, my input stops working. If I use my hotkey alt+shift I can swap back to Swedish which allows me to type in the box again, but that won't always give me full points. This can happen after just having inputted a word, hit enter to go to next and input another word, just that nothing happens when I type in the input box. If I try typing in say the address field, I can type normally. I have never experienced this in any other application or website.

I'm studying Spanish and a while ago pressing "a" worked for me to start audio for active card. But it stopped working several weeks ago. Is it changed to some other key or just removed?
Also navigation using keyboard up/down keys between mnemonics/samples/extra looks messed or there's strange logic.
By the way is it possible to play audio on wrong choice also, since it helps to remember the word.

Apologies for this - the "a" shortcut was turned off because it caused a bug with typing comments that stopped you from being able to type "a". We are going to fix it so that this bug doesn't happen, but in the meantime we had to disable the shortcut to keep things working.
We are going to add in richer user settings regarding how you are tested, and I will add when to play the audio to the list of things that we will try to put in there. Thanks for the suggestion!

When I try to view my Mempals' scores for any timeframe I get the entire community list. I can't see How I am going up against others in my class which is annoying

It seems to me that the Russian and English columns are switched around. Russian should be the primary, the one that's displayed in bold, but it's English instead. See here for example: http://www.memrise.com/set/...

I imagine having Russian and English in both columns must create problems for the dictionary users.

You are right that this looks a bit odd in the russian topic - but as long as the wordsa re int he fields with the right names, it doesn't actually *matter*. We are going to tidy it up soon, but it is a bit fiddly. In the meantime I have fixed that course that had the words int eh wrong column, and please do let me know if you come across any more.

At first I thought the whole site was crashed but now I see that it is only a problem with opening the First 5000 words of Spanish garden. I've been trying to open that garden in Chrome and Safari for about 15 minutes without success. The browser eventually just times out and goes to an error page saying no data received from site...

The courses and everything are working just fine for me, i just can't get the garden overview page to load- I only want to load it to adjust the learning mode and plant more words at a time.
I can plant/seed/harvest words with no problem at all.

Apologies that this isn't clearer, but this is just the way that the wiki works - words are not owned by the people that uploaded them; they are all part of the wiki, whoever uploaded them. You may sometimes be able to edit a word right after you have uploaded it, before it has been accepted into the wiki - but that is just a very temporary state.
With the new wiki infrastructure anyone will be able to edit any words, but whether the edit is accepted or not will depend on the curators checking and reviewing the changes. At the moment you can either keep on suggesting changes as you have been doing (which are massively appreciated, thank you!) or I can make you a curator so that you can edit them yourself.
Does that make sense?

If a water all the plants in a particular list, the 'all gardens' page will show them as all healthy; but my dashboard page will show some as wilting. Not very important but thought I should post it anyway. I just go with whichever one shows me fewer wilting plants...

I'm at the end of the Japanese course "JLPT-N5" (http://www.memrise.com/set/...), and while I'm showing having done 668/672 words, I can't plant any more seeds. The "see all gardens" screen doesn't give me that option, nor can I do it from my cave. Any ideas?

Not sure if it's wanted that way but editing a mem is not possible during a learning session however it is possible when viewing the entry by any other mean.

Do you have an option "edit word" on the popup menu above the word? You can open a new tab with all the info, then edit the mem from there (or add a new one).

You should be able to edit your mems during a learning session. If you put your mouse over where your username is, a small "Edit" button will pop up.
It doesn't show up immediately after you make it though. So if you create a mem, hit submit, and realize you accidentally made a typo, the edit button won't be there yet. Any time after that first time though it should be there.

i just spotted a minor forum bug..
i added a post in the czech forum, and in it i used some minor html to make some text bold.. however, i forgot to unbold the text, and the following posts in that forum thread also appear bold. I'll attempt to demonstrate it here the posts following this may appear both bold and italic. *** EDITED to remove html - thanks for the bug report!

Links will be working again in the forums very soon (today), and we will add in other basic formatting soon - the trouble is that, as we saw, html can cause a lot of tricky issues. The links seem to be the most important thing, is that right? What do other people think would be key other formatting to have?

I have a problem with answering multiple choice questions when i try t o click an answer it somhow marks them all and tells me i'm wrong, it's really annoying. i plugged out my mouse but it didn't work with the touchpad either. PLease help me.

this has actually been a persistent problem for me
using the dictionary in Esperanto i type for the word and nothing shows up when I know for sure it is there,
Example
search (EO:EN) orobanko : broomrape
nothing shows up
Google site:memrise.com orobanko
OR Google orobanko esperanto
and you get http://www.memrise.com/item...

I have a clingy word that seems to need a lot of love. It shows up every time I seed something new.

Sorry about this - have you tried getting it wrong? That can sometimes reset them. Otherwise I will see what I can do about sending this back to seed for you - that might be the easiest way to get it back on track.

I just encountered it again when seeding new plants. Just hit [return]. Now it showed up as "missed harvest" - I watered it and it seems to be gone. I'll see if it'll pop up again and if that's the case, let you know.

For example in the Code Flags course "Golf - Need a pilot" is accepted but the correct answer is "Golf - Need a pilot / Hauling nets" for this item:

I'm afriad that this is down to the way that punctuation is treated in the definitions - "/" ";" and "," are treated as separators between correct answers. So it might be best to avoid using those in definitions is at all possible, because it will cause confusion. Sorry about that, but I hope taht makes it clearer,

I've removed the cheese course, but my profile says "I'm learning French, Swedish and cheese". It sounds like a bad joke and I like it, but it's still a bug, I guess.

i just reported a bug concerning unclosed html in forum posts, which i attempted to demonstrate, and through doing so, it appears I have messed up the forum.. each time i respond to that thread, i am taken to a link i added within it.. sorry about that. it wasn't my intention to mess up the forum, just to demonstrate the falw.. i'll attempt to close the link now

In the Swedish course I'm taking there is "I'm ... years old" which is translated to "jag är ... år".

COuld you possibly make a comment on the word itself? - by pressing "start discussion on the word" from the top menu when you see the word in a learning session. Then I will be able to track down the item that you are talking about and be sure I am looking at the right one. We will get this fixed ASAP, thanks!

I just added Antes and Temprano to my list "I must learn". I did that in the Edit page. Those word show up properly in the list on that page but when I return to the course they are not showing up.

Do you find that it turns up if you try to plant it? I know that there is some tweaking being done to the way words are shown in the list view (some pre-computing of lists to reduce the load on re-calculating) which may be causing this glitch. I will give them the heads up on this bug and get it ironed out.

It's probably an effect of using the back button in your browser, in which case it loads the page from cache. The cached version will of course not have the updated word list*. If you click any link that brings you back to the word list, however you should see the updated wordlist. At least that is my experience thus far. :)
*(unless memrise implements some ajax-magic to force-refresh the content even though the page was not refreshed). :P

When adding new words I click on Back to list button, not browser back AND when I get there I refresh the page.
Ben I just planted the words, didn't do anything with them since my gf logged on Skype and we chatted. I just realized hours later that they had finally showed up.

I noticed that you have 60 words in your list too, so maybe that is why you can't see some of the last ones you added. I know they've been saying they wanted to split long lists up into several pages, so maybe they made the limit 50 words per page, but haven't added the "next" button. :)
When I went into a learning session, I was able to learn all the new words I added so it is showing up everywhere else except for on the http://www.memrise.com/set page.

Slow loading problem resolved by creating another problem, truncated lists and no next button.
Now honestly guys, if we are going to have to click next many times to navigate long lists in order to quick edit then I wouldn't call that quick edit anymore.

@sfrenchie, apologies for this, on the standard viewing page, only the first 50 items are loaded by default, and then you can scroll to the bottom and more will load. This speeds up the loading time. However this is not happening on your sets. I will find out why and get it fixed right away.
When you go to the "edit" page you should see all the words right away, so if you want to edit, there shouldn't be a problem - is that right?

This was weird. I had a word on my list that apparently was also in "Connor's list" and when I was editing to add part of speech & a mem, I somehow ended up going back & forth on Connor's list (using the word arrows) and couldn't get back to my own list. I had to go back to home.

Interesting...I harvest a word that I had missed last night from Introductory Spanish, the word Tras (back). Next I look at the full list since I want to add examples to this word, I can't find the word Tras in it? So I go to the Spanish dictionary and it cannot be found there? A lot of the forums contain duplicate entries, with the copy immediately following the original. Looks like people pressed "Submit" twice, or something like that. Would it be possible to filter those out, and remove existing duplicates?

I hadn't changed anything but 2 italian courses dropped off the dashboard. I found them when I looked at my gardens. then hit the x button before realising what it did (but course was not in dashboard prior to this). So then had to navigate to languages to find the courses and continue learning so that they would appear back in the dashboard - but one course still isn't. Where is the button to say show in dashboard??

This problem has only really come up for me in the last couple of weeks (maintaining a korean word list). When I add new words to the word list, it just says "adding word ____" - I get no confirmation that it's been added to the list, or rejection to say that I've already got the word in the list (I can add the same word multiple times in a row, for example).
The words are still added, but it's just an inconvenience really. Before, it'd come up with "word added," and you could see the word added to the list. If the word was already there, it'd find it in the list and highlight it.
This problem is happening on both my desktop and my laptop.

This is for chrome, btw.
In firefox it works to the extent that if the word is already in the list (before you started editing), it will find and highlight it. Also, you get confirmation that a word has been added.
It doesn't actually show the new word in the list though.

Thanks for this report - we are actually about to release a new word adding tool, which *may* be causing this issue with the old one. You can use the new one now by going to the "add words" page and then adding "new" to the end of the url.

Just noticed something with the new one: it doesn't pick up on duplicates. If I enter the same word multiple times, it'll act as if it adds them to the list. When I go back into the wordlist, the duplicates haven't been added, but it'd be cool to have notification like the old system.

In a quiz, select the correct answer. As the page displays points earned etc press pause. Leave it for a minute and resume. In the interim the next question has started and timed out.
I just saw this once, and haven't tried to replicate it. I'll come back with more info after I've tried to replicate it once or twice.

I'm also having this problem. Almost always I hit pause, it seems to go on in background. When I return, it shows me the word (as if I entered it wrong).

As of this morning (new release), questions in various Mandarin quizzes freeze up on me, but only on specific words (奴, 光芒, 同情). The question type is: characters shown, input is pinyin or English translation. When I enter the correct answer (should go green) or almost-correct (1 letter missing, should go yellow), the panel freezes (counter stops, input does not change color); if I type garbage, it goes red as normal and does not freeze. Opening up another tab shows the same behavior. Refreshing works okay again until hitting one of those same words. Some kind of record lock on those in the DB?
Platform is Opera 11.62 running on 32-bit Windows 7.

Today it has started to freeze after entering a wrong answer. The timer stops and nothing else happens. The window responds to going back or to clicking a link on the page.

Looks like a typo in the javascript for the nearly right sequence. The method should probably be called 'addClass'. This is happening every time a nearly right comes up. If the answer is completely wrong there are no issues. They should be able to fix this easily hopefully.

because they are the same thing and it makes no sense to have two German topics. If you made me a curator of Deutsch I would move them to German myself.

Both of these features used to work, but now I have no ranking and when I water my plants in German only a few have audio. Anyone know why? Thanks.

I've tried 3 separate times to add new espanol words to my list this morning and I keep getting the 'sorry there is a problem' mensaje. I assume you are working on something that is temporarily causing this - if not, then there is a problem.

When I open the General forum, I can only see two topics - Brazilian Portuguese curator and uploading FAQ. The rest of the page is blank. I don't know what happened, everything was working fine for me yesterday. Am I the only one with this problem?

The way that that feature works is to insert the parent item into the learning session so that you can learn it as well, and then when you press continue you go back to the word you were looking at. Could you explain in a bit more detail what you would like to get from this feature, and how being able to open it in another window would help? It is a massive help to us to find out how people are using all the features so that we can work out how to make them more useful.
I will check into how easy it would be to make the link ctrl-clickable to open it in a new window right away.

Is there a setting to change the font size? The text is so large and it doesn't wrap correctly on the screen, making it very difficult (as in - I will continue to use Safari on my iPad until this is fixed) to actually read what is displayed. I have to scroll all over the screen just to read it, even when I switch to the 2X setting.

I downloaded the iPhone app and it would not let me log in. The name and password fields were not functional. I could tap on the "don't have an id?" option and a new screen would appear to create the username and password, but those fields were also non- functional, and when I clicked on "already have an account" it still will not allow me to type in my name or password. I then decided to "kill" the app (by double tapping the start button on the iPhone and holding the app until the 'minus' symbol appeared) and now when I try to launch the app, it says it's loading and then just disappears. It never gets to the login screen. I tried deleting the app and reinstalling it, and now it's not crashing anymore, but it still won't let me log in- same symptom, inactive buttons for name and password.

Thanks, Ben, I appreciate how responsive you are! By the way, I just tried it on my iPad (also iOS5.1) and the same thing happens on the iPad. Also, on the iPad, I have a logitech Bluetooth Keyboard, so I use my iPad in Landscape orientation, but (at least the login screen) doesn't seem to recognize rotation of the iPad as an input to change to landscape format.

i had the idea to create one big course that contains all the words of several of my smaller and more specific courses. the intention is to make watering easier (e.g. imagine you have 10 courses where there is just 1 plant wilting each, watering can be done way faster when you have one big course with 10 plants wilting).
there is just one problem. in my lists i have a lot of words in [square brackets] in the definition column. with the recent memrise update those words are now displayed in cursive letters. anyway, when i download a list, excel transforms square brackets into " WORD ". unfortunately memrise doesnt seem to be able to retransform this code into square brackets when re-uploading. so basically all the words with square brackets cannot be matched with the old ones and are considered as new words in the database after re-uploading.

The system is not set up to accept square brackets in any of the fields - they will create problems in a variety of places, and more so as we add in more complex types of test. So it would be best for you to remove square brackets and any other symbols such as form the definitions in the topic that you are learning - take a look at the suggested conventions for language wikis on Memrise here - http://www.memrise.com/conv... for more detailed ideas.
If you want to just create a combined list of all your smaller lists, then you can just paste in the words or definitions into the add words box in the new course creation tool (which will replace the old one next week, but in the meantime you can use it by just adding "new" to the end of the url when you are adding words to a list.) That will find all the words in the wiki for you (you only need to paste the words, not the definitions, so the square brackets won;t be an issue.)

thank you for your answer. i tried it with the new editing tool. i really like the overall idea of the new editing tool. however, i am a bit concerned as to whether i will be able to use it on my netbook (which i use 95% of the time). the new tool eats up a lot more ressources than the old one. just to load the edit screen of a 2500 word course took me 5 minutes (no exaggeration), including a pop-up ("script not responding") showing up 4 times which i always ignored. it works way better on my desktop pc, but unfortunately i dont have it with me when i am at university :)
one more thing: could you please make me a curator for "swedish to german"? i need to fix some issues with uploaded sound files.

Good point - the page loading time is an issue that we are dealing with - I think that the immediate answer is going to be displaying the lists in sections of 250 words or so, and you can then press to see more. This will cut down the loading time a lot. Would that be ok? Do you need to always be able to see all the words in the list? what about if there were pages? would that cause any problems?
I have set you up as a curator of the Swedish - German, but actually that won't let you sort out the audio issues; at the moment only staff can remove audio. This is going to be improved very soon, but it is the situation at the moment. So if you leave comments saying what needs to be done, then I will do it for you,

I would even be ok if no single word is displayed. i would be satisfied with just these 2 features: "search a word within the course" and "add new word". but your proposal sounds good as well. i was also thinking about splitting up my course into parts of 200. it should work either way.

There is a bug when using the up and down arrows to navigate between different kinds of mems when seeds are planted. I have most recently encountered this problem here: http://www.memrise.com/cave... with the word čekat. Using the down arrow once takes me from 'mem' to 'samples', but using it again does not take me down to 'extra information'. Instead I have to go back up to 'mem' and press the up arrow to go down to 'extra information', which doesn't make much sense to me.

There was a glitch in the email links for a couple of hours - are you still having trouble now? I am based in Beijing all the time and I generally don't have any issue with the links. But that said there is a lot of regional variance in the internet in China, as I am sure you know, so it is possible that there is an issue in some places. I will definitely look into it.

Recently subscriber to the amazing idea that is Memrise. Have been an avid PC user of the website and decided to try and get the app working. I have an iPod 4th Gen iOS 5.1, live in the UK and loaded up Memrise and signed in with the account that I currently use.
I tried downloading Mandarin Survival, Introductory French and Introductory Italian but everytime I get an error message saying that it couldn't connect to Memrise.com. It only ever reaches halfway on the progress bar before producing the error bar. I tried restarting the app and logging in and out but that didn't work. Can I do anything?

I don't think I'm getting all the notifications I should, according to my settings. For example, I wanted to be informed when someone started learning a word list I've created, but not even once it has happened (OK, there are only 8 or so learners in the course I've created, but why wasn't I informed about it?)

I DON'T want to receive any emails from memrise. When I want to find out what's new or if my plants need watering, I come here. I don't want memrise to "invade" my privacy.
In my settings, I chose not to receive any emails, but they keep coming to my inbox. By the way, why is there an option to "opt-out from all emails from memrise" (or something like that) if when I try to click on it it doesn't accept my choice?

@Ben, I still haven't received any email informing me about new learners in "my" courses (there are a few more learners).
I get all the other type of emails about mempals, high fives, mems, wilting plants, comments on the threads ... but not the new learners.
What do you think is happening?

I was browsing the Korean forum and I noticed a bug report that hasn't been posted here. Please read about it in the Korean forum under the topic "Major Hangul Input bug". It seems rather serious - there are problems entering Korean letters after answering a question incorrectly.

In the Swedish session, the letter "A" is considered to be correct when it should be "Ä".
For example, the word "upptäcka", if I write "upptacka", the system says it is correct.
Haven't checked Ö and O but I suppose it would be the same.

The same happens with stress marks in other languages (for example, "e" instead of "é" in Portuguese). But you will notice that if there are two or more words with a stress mark in the same phrase, you will only get it right either with all the marks or with none - you can't have half way.

Some minutes ago I received an email with a warning that some of my plants were about to die (this was the idea, the words were different).

Generally, when I finish harvesting my words and sometimes when I finish watering words, the screen gets stuck on the loading page. I have to go back to the dashboard, then back to the garden. Also, for me to open up Memrise in my browser (google chrome), I usually have to click it at least twice. Generally, it says that it refuses to load the first time, but then the second (or third time) it opens. I've had the problem for at least a week now, but I think longer. It eats up a lot of time and makes it hard to use. Also, there's something strange happening when I try to add more words to a list now. After I add them I have to reload the page to get them to show up.

I will look into this for you at once, it sounds very annoying indeed. Which page are you going to when you load up the Memrise page?
For adding words, could you give the new editing tool a try - you can get to it by adding "new" onto the end of the url on the course editing page. We are still honing it before general release, but I would be keen to hear your feedback.

I'm generally trying to go to the dashboard, but I almost always get this message:
No data received
Unable to load the webpage because the server sent no data.
Here are some suggestions:
Reload this webpage later.

Then, I click the connection again and it generally works. It might be a problem on my side, but it happens every time and it's the only page I have such a problem with.

I'm having loading problems too. If I click on 'Water' (Introductory French) or Water Now (Beginner 5: Around the House, 48 Plants sprouting)I get stuck on the next loading page, which attempts to reload unsuccessfully every 10 sec or so.

i have just tested the new edit tool and i dont like it right now. first of all loading the new editing page is really painful (for my netbook). it takes like 2 minutes in which i can do nothing else. and furthermore, where am i supposed to enter the new words? i could only find 4 buttons at the bottom like "shuffle", "fix" etc

I think it must be some sort of server issue. Leave it long enough - 30 mins+ - and eventually it loads.

when attempting to add alternatives to one of the vanzelfsprekend courses, a popup told me something went wrong and memrise was notified.
Not sure what else this affects, but I thought I'd start a discussion here in case that notification was also broken ;-)

I spotted a while back that on the Spanish Dictionary page, the "Moderated Items only" checkbox appears to do nothing - both moderated and unmoderated items are always shown.
Is this a known bug?

The reasoning for this was that if you have added words yourself then you might want to be able to find them on the search, so they are shown. But it makes for a confusing experience, and it now shows too many words that you haven't really ever learned before. It needs to be tightened up, thank you for the reminder,

I have moved most of those - the ones with mixed English and German are hard, because if I move them over then all the English words will go too, creating more work. We need to delete all the english words from those sets ideally and then move them over. Very tedious. I will see if we can find a shortcut.

In one of the word lists I am doing (100+ most common Spanish words) for English speakers the word día is translated as nap which is wrong for English (día is day, nap would be siesta), having done a bit of investigation it would seem that nap is the Hungarian word for day (as it was originally created for a Hungarian-Spanish list but it is appearing in an English-Spanish list, is there any way to change this... It is clearly confusing people as someone has made a mem to help them remember that día means nap in English when it doesn't. I have linked to the work below.

I'm looking at the leaderboard. The new day started a couple hours ago I think and I did some work today, enough that I got around 2000 pts. I see the 1st one with 49213 pts for the day...in 2 hours???

There are some cheater lists out there where all you have to enter is something like "1". You basically rush through 5000 words, just hitting 1 enter 1 enter 1 enter 1 enter like a maniac and amass huge amounts of points.
This is a Beta, guess stuff like that will be sorted in due time. There are some people I feel sorry for here, too, it can't be helped.

At some point, when memrise is more polished and out of Beta, one can actually enjoy the warm and fuzzy feeling to be ahead of the pack... but right now, I wouldn't want to take points too serious.
It's not even transparent for me why I just received 75 points after having received 50 or 25 before, when all I did in all these cases was typing in the correct answer.
The transparency is not there. But I'm like you in this regard, I gauge my progress by looking at % done right and number of words I learned.

The percentage you are referring to actually disappears so fast that if you scratch your eyebrows you missed it. I would like for it to be carried to the main page as a little gauge, green, orange, red...hoover on it and you get the average %, with a tiny square at the bottom (little button) to reset.

I have just created a new course in Mandarin and trying to add words has been giving me a headache. Please point out what I'm doing wrong:
I'm working on the edit course page, where I can "Add Words". When I type "ma3" in the right (Mandarin) text field, I get a long list, but the only (ma3) is 玛, "agate". But I want to add "horse" (马), which is only found when typing horse into the left (English) text field.
What do I have to type in the Mandarin field to get the same result?

Apologies for this not being clear - the "mandarin" field searches the database of Mandarin words, which are all chinese characters. There is not a simple way to search by pinyin. But if you are typing the pinyin then your computer input system should make typing the character very easy - let me know if you need help with setting that up.

Ah! What got me on the wrong path is that typing pinyin into the mandarin field still works out just fine for the vast majority of cases. Weird.
